| Here's the deal- I have the oppertunity to be commissioned as a Warrent Officer 1 in the State Guard, in the Provost Marshal's section. On this end it seems to be a good deal, an oppertunity to put my uniform on again, part time. But like all "recruiters" he's only telling me one side of the story. If any of you can, let me know of your experiences with the State Guard, good and bad. From my understanding, this group has been told by the powers that be that they will be up to snuff and they seem to be serious about their mission under the state Directer Of Homeland Security. |
| I don't think that's the case, being that the Provost Marshal is the U.S. Marshal for the Eastern District of Texas and was a 173rd LRRP in Vietnam, and the guy trying to get me in was in the Army for 23+ years ( 5th Group, AMU, Golden Knights), and the rest of what I've seen are all prior service with impressive records, and some currently hold high law enforcement positions. |
| I was a Marine for 5 years. I did a year in the National Guard in Lufkin. Once, we were shooting at a base near Austin and the Texas Guard was there. They were all officers or high enlisted rank, no PFCs or corporals anywhere. No offense, but they didn't look like a real military unit. Even the National Guard looked squared away compared to these guys. I don't believe they are even paid and doubt very seriously they are taken into consideration buy state level authorities when homeland defense plans are being made. Just my opinion. |

No one takes these guys seriously. Locally, they have a penchant for posing as police officers with "Texas State guard Military Police Badges" These screwballs think this allows them to arrest people, make traffic stops (usually on young females) and get out of hot check arrests. They are not paid, Anyone below the rank of Sergeant Major apparently does not exist. I would place them as somewhere below the Civil Air Patrol and the Girl Scouts in Homeland Defense considerations. I've taken quite a few in jail. Lots of them here in Austin. (They have a building on Camp Mabry) I would stay very far away. ![]()

No one I've ever talked to knows quite WHAT they are. (even the members) I beleive they may have had a purpose once, back during the 60's cold war possibly, but it's just a gathering of wanna-be commandos now. These guys strongly remind me of those BDU clad "experts" at gunshows that you just can't get away from. |
Sounds JUST like the Indiana Guard Reserve. |

I was in the Texas Army National Guard for a few years. The State Guard was mentioned but we never saw them and they were not integrated into anything in training or war plans. The theory I heard was that they would man or secure the armory when we deployed. I never saw or heard of that happen. In Galveston, the closest to a real mission was for "crowd control" during one of their festivals. Even than, that was a joke. If you want to wear a uniform, at least get into a unit where you get paid. The National Guard was too political and not war ready enough for me. I was a combat vet andgot tired of the weak BS and lousy leadership out of Camp Mabry. I would assume that the State Guard is worse.
