I'm looking for advice/help from Charleston area locals. I might be transferred to the Charleston area later this year and need to start researching the area for living purposes. I've been there as a tourist but never looked heavily into living there.
Needs - 15-30 min drive to North Charleston area (JBC/CHS). My works hours change daily-weekly, but typically start at 3am-6am. - My current rent is: $1000 for 2BR 1BA 970SQ FT. I need a place that is similar in size that allows working dog breeds. If I can save a few bucks for my first year, a 1BR is ok. - Tips regarding taxes, vehicle registration and other typical life requirements to live in the area. - I prefer to live in family type areas, but anything "safe" works. More concerned about the wife than anything. - Job agencies or recommended companies for my wife to find new employment. Corp work is her background. - Recommended banks. Thanks for the help. Edit: Cleaned up phone post. |

Are you suggesting that you need to be within 30 mins of the airport?
Where, exactly, would you be working? Where is the office / location? I ask, because with the number of people who have moved here, it literally can take 45 mins + to drive from one side of town to the other, depending on where you live. i.e., I live in Mt P, my office is in N Chas, and if I don't leave before 715 AM, it can take me 45 mins to get to work. 17 miles. |

My primary work location as of now will be at JBC/CHS. I don't work normal hours, so rush hour has never been an issue. I have to be able to respond to the area with the dog in 15-30mins (not factoring in rush hour). Not my rule, just a part of the guidelines for responding to incidents during off hours. My current drive time in Columbus (17 miles) is 20-30 mins. I was looking at James Island, Goose Creek, Summerville, Mt P (Using 526) to get an idea of what I had in mind. |

Rumour has it, 526 may go toll in some areas so keep that in mind. If it passes - and it's a long way out - it will be the new area they intend to extend out to John's Island. OP - you'll probably want to avoid Mt P, then. At least the upper / newer part of Mt P. It's 30 mins to the airport on a good day. 526 is a good path, but can get severely backed up during rush hour. Also, if you're looking to rent - good luck. There's not a lot of places to rent in the area, in general, and those that are available are very highly priced. That's one of the issues with the area right now. You might be able to find something in Summerville, West Ashley that wouldn't be too far away from the airport (JBC). The rush hour around here kills everything. Turns an easier drive into a mess, as I mentioned earlier. |

Edit: Cleaned up phone post. I don't know what rent is like here http://www.parksatnexton.com/, but the apartments are new, just off I-26 in Summerville, which would give a straight shot down 26 to your work location. There are other apartment complexes going up in the area, such as off Palmetto Commerce Parkway, which runs between North Chuck and Ladson. I'd advise finding a leasing agent who could help more than I can. Vehicle registration also involves property taxes, which vary with the vehicle and its age. As for banks, I use Heritage Trust FCU. I've been with them for about 28 years and have never had a problem. Also, CCW is not prohibited in their branches. |

I lived in Summerville and even when I was 0700-1500 I would still hit stupid traffic driving to work, though it was somewhat better when I went 0600-1400. Then I lived in W. Ashley and it was 15 minutes door to door to the airport every morning at 0530. I miss that, but the regular traffic in W. Ashley made me want to eat my service weapon so I'm happy in Mt. Pleasant. |
