sold out by the time I read the email.  Does anyone know, is PSA giving up on making 1911s?  I think it was the shot show 2014 where they were announced.

They have stated that a production model will be out soon with cosmetic changes.  IMO, they realized people wouldn't pay $2k for their pistol, and are making them more economical ( less slide cerations, GI sights instead of Novak, no front strap checkering, etc).  What those changes will be we won't know for sure till they come out.

im with you D16.

the fact the slides theyre selling have novaks, make me think theyre going more ATI/ROCK island level instead of wilson combat.

Im excited. I got a stainless frame and slide.

I sure hope when you get them in your hands that the frame/slide combos will actually work.

I bought all the parts to build up a PA 10 the way I wanted and now I have to wait for the barrel I want to come available. I have done tried an aftermarket barrel with the same DPMS profile and it wont work.

Jump with caution. You might just land on a landmine!!  Especially if they make their 1911 with any proprietary parts(if that is even possible on the 1911 platform).

I think I would rather have an RIA anyway.

That is weird how on a limited supply of frames that were sold out are now back in stock.  I did a little research and putting together a 1911 is beyond my skills, especially when it comes to fitting the barrel to the slide.

Please let us know how your projects turn out, I am very interested.

Guys, be careful. The 1911 design, no matter how much precision goes into its parts manufacture, is definitely NOT an assemble parts and shoot gun. Parts need tuning and fitting to work smoothly and that takes training and experience. There are some pistol smiths around here that can do that, but will you save enough in buying parts instead of whole gun to cover their assembly and tune charges? Doubtful. OTOH, If you have skills and experience assembling 1911s go for it. Me, I have enough by Colt and other manufactures not to even be the least bit interested in a PSA marked Gun.

I have an elderly gentleman in the area who does my 1911  and other 'smith work, but he is not taking on new customers. I know of some others in the area that can do it, and can drop names if you really want to go that route.

granted your right on numerous levels here.

I have enough faith that i can build it though.  I dont think it will be anything that i just slap together in a weekend though.  i am looking at a more long term project that will slowly go together while i learn the finer points of less is more, and easy does it, and tkae a little off fit and test and repeat more than otherwise.  I know it will take a lot more finesse than my AK builds do, but I am also self tought there, and learn fairly well when it comes to doing things with my hands. I look at the PSA stuff 1911 wise as a long term learning build program for me and it to be even neater that they are stamped Columbia, SC on them.  I had wanted to build a 1911 from scratch for a long time now, but this is the perfect oppertunity now that PSA has released them.

PSA has a track record of releasing a limited number, then releasing more, in order to see how folks buy them.  i dont agree with that practice but it is what they have done in the past.

I also get the points about the AR10 release, the ar9 release, the PTAC release, etc.. yes, their track record isnt always perfect, but I will say every PSA part ive bought, and built / assembled have always been top quality, correctly made, well fitting and accurate as hell parts.  maybe im in the minority, but that is my experience. i cant see that a 70 series 1911 frame and slide will be anything more than just that as well.

My post was definitely NOT to knock PSA's products. I once bought a complete Colt 1911 frame only from CDNN many years ago and proceeded to assemble the slide/barrel upper assembly. The gun fired and stove piped every time. Sent it to a good gunsmith and it came back running like the proverbial Swiss Watch. More power to you guys who have the skills, tools and desire to learn the tricks of the trade.

As for the Columbia, SC markings, I am satisfied with the Columbia SC markings on my FN Forty-Nine. But, hey variety is what keeps this hobby interesting.

I am simply starting with frame and slide.  If I can't get that to work then I will sell it at a loss to someone who can.  Once that is done, I will look at barrels and how they fit.  One piece at a time for me....I prefer to build my own stuff, and I love a challenge.  I could have bought a RIA for the price of the frame/slide, but I would rather do my own if I can.  Encouragement is needed.

If I can build a functioning and fairly accurate 1911 from a questionable 80% frame, then you, and anyone else so inclined with any mechanical aptitude, can get one going from
a known in-spec frame and slide.  it'll take a while as it is time consuming to ensure correct fitting of everything to everything else, but it is doable.  And the smile on your face
after the first full mag of ammo cycles through it at the range will be priceless.

Now, if they would offer these as 80% so I could do another in stainless.....

From what I am hearing the frames and slides are going together pretty tight, perhaps minor lapping will be involved, but they seem to be very high quality, which is expected if these were going to be $2k guns originally.  I get mine tomorrow.

sanlan, wasnt meaning to infer you were, sorry if it came across that way.

I'm with d16 on these so far.  Ive heard they  are excellent fits together. Im hoping laping and that is all as well.  Ive heard this from  multiple sources thus far too. so in my opinion there is hope that it will be that way.

I'm fairly confident in my inherent mechanical ability.  With all new projects though, its best to read 4x and then read again, then plan, and plan and plan, then slowly incrementally act.  I think i can handle it, but encouragement will be appreciated.  I'm piking up my frame and slide between 1220-1240 pm today.

Sarco has complete kits, if they have them in stock...but a better option will be to just order what you want.  Brownell's has complete pin/spring sets, CDNN has remington beavertails and mainspring housings at a great price.  I plan to source from both of those, and midwayusa as well.

IMO PSA should have everything available, but the website is way out of stock on most things.

[#17]
Get parts from Brownells, Midwayusa.com, and www.cylinder-slide.com. Rock River has good parts, but their customer service at times can make PSA's customer service shine.
I have had good experience on the few parts and mags I have bought from CDNN.

I would not use Sarco or Gunpartscorp, based on others experiences posted on line, unless you want to take a gamble.

Also, when it comes to spare mags, stick to USGI, Metalform, Mec-gar, Chip McCormick and Wilson brand mags. Most of the others are a roll of the dice on fit and function. Just like on an AR, you want magazines that (A) feed and function reliably, (b) will always engage the slide lock on firing the last round, and (C) drop free from the mag well every time you eject the mag.

some will be "drop in".  In the psa1911 thread, one guy ordered a remington beavertail and had to do minor fitting.  I ordered mine and had to do no fitting.  I had to peen my rails though, and will still need to lap them.  GCO's slide fit like a glove from the start and didn't need to be peened.  For a 1911 build, you have to be prepared to do everything, and pray you have to do little.

I have almost completed mine,  so far only the barrel had to be fitted,  I picked up remington stuff from CDNN,  and it all went in without any fitting,  oh and the safety had to be fitted.  now im no 1911 pro and have not shot it yet but so far it seems to function.  I ordered some sights that did not fit the rear slot,  the sights were very loose so I ordered another set.

I did also order some stuff from fusion firearms,  they had good prices and quick shipping.

Mostly older Colt parts except the Montana Rifleman barrel. The Wilson beaver tail grip safety I added after getting the gun set-up. It wasn't a pain to fit but did take time to get it just right.
