Getting close to making a decision on moving to Boise for a new job.

Limited internet research has the wife and I excited about it as we enjoy outdoor activities very much. Currently we live in Dallas so the change would be huge I assume.

Any information yall can pass along that would help bring us in, or push us away would be very helpful. Not only in regards to daily life, cost of living, weather, and entertainment. But also NFA laws, hunting, shooting on public land and so on.

From what I can tell, yall are very gun friendly.

Thanks in advance.

These guys will probably be firing up thursday night pizza at Idaho Pizza Company again soon:  BoiseShooters

Laws are better for firearms than Texas, you can buy what you want, and you can open carry.  We have a local silencer company you may have heard of called Gemtech.  Shooting to the south of town in the desert past the power lines.  You can hunt with silencers, but not full auto.  Our state has never outlawed hunting with silencers to my knowledge.  No magazine limit for shooting, carry, or hunting.  (other than the 2+1 limit the feds put on federal birds, you can use 30 rnd drums on grouse if you feel the need)

If you drink hard stuff, there's no drive through alcohol stores, and the state maintains a monopoly on the sales of it, so no cheap liquor at Costco.

Come with a job, depending on your skill set, it's a pain to find a job in Boise if you don't come already having one.

Cool, excellent information. Thank you for that!

Not a big liquor drinker, but my wife and I are huge fans of good beer. Hopefully there is some good local beer to try out.

I thought Gemtech was from there but did not know. Thats a plus as I will be ordering a can from them very soon.

How are the winters and summers up there? Gas prices? Crime?

Crime, yeah, we get like one murder from domestic reasons a year.  Maybe.  There are usually more homicides from the Boise Police Dept shooting guys with butter knives and such than actual bad guys.  Summer will be about as warm as TX, but shorter and drier than you know.  Winter will be colder and snowier than you know, but ok, as everyone in that area slows down about 20-30 under the speed limit during the snow.  You'll need a humidifier to sleep at night for a while due to bloody noses from the humidity change.   (especially during the winter)  Temp inversions lower the air quality during the winter, dust storms sometimes plague the summer.  (I lost my AC in my truck the day before a dust storm that left me in my truck for 45 min with no AC and the windows up, no recirc)  You'll probably not meet me as I moved to the windier side of the state, (Idaho Falls) but I'm friends with the site owner for BS.com and will show up periodically for pizza/shoots/ etc.  I've still got a home in Meridian.  The air is way cleaner on the east side of the state, but there's not as much to do outside of ski and Yellowstone.  If I had the money to retire right this minute, (say 1 or 2 million) I'd buy a place in McCall.  Meridian St Lukes is the best hospital I've been to in all my life.  Boise Gun Company looks like a flee market for guns, but my friend runs Sawtooth Tactical in Garden City.  I used to go to Vineyard Boise, located in Garden City.  Ridge to Rivers is an awesome site for day hikes, and some close in ATV trails.  Warning:  Hunting sucks around here as it's all public ground, and the locals don't wanna tell you where you can actually aquire game.  Most game has to be worked for as in 2 to 3 miles from any roads.  The governor has directed Fish and Game to stop enforcing wolf hunting rules.  (as in, don't keep them just shoot them and let them lay to reduce the population)  You'll probably get busted if you take a wolf home and don't tag it.

Will answer more later

Very informative, thanks again!

Did not think about the humidifier, that will be a life saver. The more I hear the more I like, looks like its going to boil down to the money they offer.

Hopefully I get to visit before I have to make a decision.

Are you a native Texan?  I was born and raised in Boise, went to school up north here in Lewiston, then my wife and I moved to McKinney in 04.  Spent 6.5 years there in N. Texas.  We moved back "home".  What type of work will you be doing?  Yes there is some pretty good beer here, especially mircrobrews.  If you have specific questions you can email/pm me.  Oh and bring a case of Rudy's Sause, shipping is expensive!

Native Texan here. Going on 30 years in the Dallas area. Currently in the Frisco area. I will be in the RF industry if all goes well. Flying up there next Friday/Saturday to talk about the job and check the place out.

I am a big microbrew fan and will be looking to taste some local brews next weekend. Thinking of staying in Downtown and walking to the taphouse. I heard there is a place like The Flying Saucer up there, do you know what its called? (Crazy amount of beers in stock)

I will totally bring you some Rudys Sauce, that stuff is awesome!

Where downtown?  If you're at the Grove you're in very close proximity to lots of good beer.  Although a block or two away, we prefer Hotel 43.  Boise does beer, kind of like Bend, OR.  The place you're thinking about, and yes there are two of them in the city, one right downtown, and the other located at the mall, is called Old Chicago.  It's a chain, and they have the World Beer Tour, which consists of 110 beers.  Both locations have some 25+ beers on tap.  There is also Bittercreek Ale house (double check their website, the place next door they own was going under remodel recently).  There are also a couple of Brewforia locations in the Treasure Valley, and you'll soon find that driving in Boise is nowhere near as stressful as the metro-mess.  Breweries in the Boise area consist of the following and more popping up all the time, so I may have forgotten one or two and in no particular order:

Tablerock (Boise's Oldest)
Slanted Rock (If you go, talk to them about the burnt orange, there is a strong Texas love there, although I typically shout Gig Em when I can)
Sockeye Brewing
10 Barrel(originally from Bend, just opened a location in Boise)
Highlands Hollow
Crooked Fence
Kilted Dragon
Payette Brewing Co.

There are also lots of restaurants in the valley that have good beer on tap, one of our favorites, and close to Slanted Rock is Grammercy Park Pizza & Grill.  If you're into spirits, scotch in particular, the Piper Pub is also a great place, but for local, probably the best is Bardenay.  Tequila will be at Matador.  Not sure if it matters, but Boise has passed laws prohibiting smoking in bars, just an FYI...

If you need or want any other recommendations, please ask!

Oh, and no need for the Rudy's, I brought back a case when we last visited in December, and my in-laws are bringing more next month when they come up for my niece's graduation.  But thanks!  Just a reminder if/when you move.

Plenty of places to go explore, I'd recommend driving up to Idaho City, or if you have more time McCall.  Farmer's market should be up and running on Saturday, always a good time.  And yes, Boise proper, downtown is really that clean all the time.  You can also go check out the Capital Building, and tons of museums.  It's nowhere near the size of the Ft. Worth Cabelas, and I didn't get a chance to hit Allen, but go to the one in Boise to see the Elmer Keith exhibit, a must if you're a wheel gun guy.  Milt Sparks and Chris Reeve Knives also in town, as well as Gemtech, PWS.  If you venture up to my neck of the woods, you have Seekins Precision and Nightforce.

Also, weather should be nice, you can also walk the greenbelt along the river.  Caution, the water everywhere in Idaho is 10x colder than in Texas, as it's all runoff.  Head up to Lucky Peak for boating in the summer, Bogus for skiing/snowboarding in the winter, Banks (45 minutes) for whitewater, or out to the desert in the Owyhee's.  I have a feeling you'll fall in love, especially if outdoors is your thing.

Thanks for the killer post. I will be a the Grove and looking to taste some local beers. Thanks for the list, there are quite a few on there I did not see. I picked The Grove because they have free airport pickup.

The greenbelt is high on my list for Saturday afternoon. I read about the farmers market (co-op?) really excited about that as ours in Dallas is a joke.

All the outdoor activities is the main drive behind wanting to take the job. Its hard to do much in DFW other than sit in traffic and camp next to people with loud music and wifi.

Well Kaliforniya is becoming impossible to retire in and the gun grab is in full force so we are seriously thinking about moving the ID in the next 3-5. Probably end up in Caldwell, Marshing or Star from what we have seen so far. Love it up there.

Sweet!  Meant to ask you how the visit went. I was actually down last weekend and meant to give you some contact infor if you wanted to grab a brew, but some family stuff came up and was pre-occupied.  So what were your impressions? Where did you eat/drink?   Positive, I presume, since you are moving.  ETA?

Trip went better than expected. I have taken the job, and will move up there first weekend in June.

I was blown away at how clean downtown is and how fresh the air smells. Everyone I came into contact with was incredibly nice, something I am not use to in Dallas.

The market on Saturday was full of good food and lots of cool junk to buy. The greenbelt and city parks will occupy lots of my time when I move up there. Lots of good beer and scenic views sealed the deal for me.

I cant wait to get my Buell up there and ride to Idaho City! I can only imagine all the other scenic rides that the hills have to offer.

City Park

Mountains outside Idaho City

I have to find a hole to sleep in until September when my Wife will be able to move up due to our lease that we cant afford to end early. So if anyone has any advice in that department, It would be super helpful as I need to get something rolling asap.

Overall I rate Idaho as a 1/10. The place is shit and no one needs to move there. Its all taters and flat land.

I wish!  I have some good friends/co-workers that do though.  The Hogs have been putting in some major time recently; they are always flying around town.

And any time for that beer, if my schedule allows!

oh man, if you like a nice ride, go from Boise up 55 to New Meadows, then up 95 to Lewiston, go up 12 to Lolo, down 93 to Challis, 75 to 21 through Idaho City, then down on into Boise.

Take a camera and a tent, it's two or three days depending on how stout you are.

So what is the population of Boise and the surrounding area these days? How much has it grown in the last say 5 years? Yes I know I can get that info from Google but I am more interested in the perceived than the factual.
