For what it is worth, a law was just passed that allows for carry of a firearm in a bag without a permit. This was intended to legalize all the women that carry in their purse and never felt the need to get a permit. The police generally speaking would look over this, so this just made it legal. So basically you could still carry in a man bag if you are trying to be on the up and up.
Nolo will come correct me if I say anything wrong but here is my understanding of things. In MS, you can have a firearm in your home or place of business, no permit required. Your car is an extension of your home so you can have a handgun in your car. If you feel that a threat is imminent, you can carry your gun without a permit. Like if you have your gun in your car and you have to get out of it, but some sketchy dudes are eye balling you. That is my understanding of things, but I am not a lawyer. I didn't pay to much attention to the passing of the open carry law. Only way that helped me is that if my cover garment comes up, I can't get in trouble for not concealing my firearm. Honestly not sure if Open Carry doesn't require permit. Just laying some possible options out for you while you wait the 12 months. It really is ridiculous. |

163 the applicant: 164 (a) Is a resident of the state and has been a resident 165 for twelve (12) months or longer immediately preceding the filing 166 of the application. However, this residency requirement may be 167 waived * * * if the applicant possesses a valid permit from 168 another state, is active military personnel stationed in 169 Mississippi, or is a retired law enforcement officer establishing 170 residency in the state; Utah permit should be good to go. |

The carrying concealed without a permit if your life is threatened is a defense to prosecution. Not something I'd like to rely on because that means you've been charged with a crime of carrying concealed. You also don't have to have a permit to carry openly. The purse carry goes into effect July 1. |

You should be fine but dont expect the police to know about the new law changes. Every one I talked to in Jackson was quoting some stuff from 2010 when a permit had to be from a state that had reciprocity. Now it says any state's CHL. I run an OR permit here until it expires then Ill get a MS one. Or a Utah one. |
