I am 12 month from moving from MA to NH and would like advice on several topics of places to consider or avoid.

I am  thinking between Concord and Claremont laterally, but east of Concord would be OK as long as it is away from the tourist areas.

some factors are High Schools
NFA friendly
avoiding liberal towns or counties
distance to gun clubs

anything else that would be important.

my job requires that I drive to Boston, but only once a week and I do not mind 2-2.5 hours to Boston to live in a place I love.

thanks for the suggestions

stay away from the newport/claremont area if you want better schools. lots of hard drugs circulating those high schools

If you really want to live that far north consider Bow - excellent schools and you can find property that you can shoot on. If you want to live closer to the state line look at Amherst or Hollis. Both towns have great schools and are close to several clubs.

EDIT: I just learned where Claremont is.  It's pretty far out there so the southern towns I mentioned are probably a no-go for you.  I do, however, have a coworker who lives in Henniker and loves it.  I stand by my suggestion of Bow.  It's a little farther south than the line you mentioned but it is a great town all around.

We have looked in Henniker and like it, just trying to do cheaper. I will look at Bow.

Just looking further north for cheaper real estate, south would be better for work.

Thanks

We've been in Bow since mid-January and love it.  We happened to get real lucky on our place and haven't seen anything of this caliber listed within $50-$75K.

If the prices and taxes are worrying you in Bow, you could look at Dunbarton.  They just worked out a deal to send their kids to our schools.  We have friends in Manchester that are considering Dunbarton for that exact reason.  It's a little "souther" but still has the same rural feel.

Alton is a good town . Concord is about 30 min. away. Newington/Potsmouth 40min away. New high school and soon to be new(remodeled) k-8 school. Taxes are about the cheapest in the state as long as you don't buy a home on the lake . I can make it to Boston in less then 2 hours (still need good food once in a while). Only traffic is on the weekend memorial day - labor day .It gets really quiet here after labor day/foliage season. I moved here from Chicago and even the summer traffic here is nothing compared to where im from so it doesn't bother me. Good luck wherever you end up.

Check out Stoddard.  Low taxes, lots of great property for sale reasonably, ability to shoot all you want.  There's an elementary school in town.  Middle and high school go to Keene.  I lived there for 13 years, would go back in a heartbeat.

Have a look over this way, in Francestown, New Boston etc. I can be in Boston before traffic really gets going, in 1.5 hours.

Middle of no where, but still within reasonable distance of shopping etc. for the wife.

Please don't paint the towns just east of there with your broad brush.

there are great towns around there, and i don't think it was a broad brush. I'm specifically speaking about those high schools.  i personally went to Newport high for half the school day and heroin was easier to get there than alcohol.

ETA: sorry shouldn't have said "area"

Bow, NH...I didn't think that was a gun friendly town.  Don't they have a ban on hunting within the town?

Uhhh, no.

No "target shooting" on town-owned land.  Hunting is permitted.

Manchester isn't bad either. I'm from RI originally and Providence makes Manchester look like the streets are paved with gold. The outskirts of the city could be a good place to go.

Grew up in Henniker/Weare. Pretty nice here, and the schools were pretty good back when I was in school.

Town of Bow NH Special Restrictions:
Additional Restrictions

Bow: All hunting is forbidden in the following area with any firearm other than a shotgun, muzzleloading rifle or bow and arrow or crossbow: southeast from the Concord-Bow boundary line along the west bank of the Merrimack River, then westerly along the Bow-Hooksett boundary line, then northerly along I-93, then westerly along Robinson Road, then northwest along Branch Londonderry Turnpike East, then southerly along Woodhill Road, then southwesterly along Dunbarton Center Road to the Bow-Dunbarton boundary line, then northwesterly along the Bow-Dunbarton boundary line to the Bow-Hopkinton boundary line, then easterly along the Bow-Hopkinton boundary line to the Bow-Concord boundary line, then southeasterly and easterly along the Bow-Concord boundary line to the west bank of the Merrimack River.

Looks like certain places in Bow you cannot hunt period, and just some places you can hunt with Archey gear, Shotgun with slug, or Muzzle Loader.  No center fire Rifle or Handgun allowed.  Bow is very restrictive against firearms for some reason.

A lot of towns have the rifle hunting restrictions like that in southern NH. Has to do with population density, and how something like a .30-06 round can travel if you dump one off at a 45° angle.

ETA: I thought the handgun hunting rules for NH changed for this year, so you can now use a handgun in places where shotgun/muzzleloader only places (not during muzzleloader season obviously)

You've read it wrong.  The whole town is open to hunting.  The areas described herein are shotgun, muzzleloader and archery only.  The areas not described in that tract allow all of the same IN ADDITION TO rifles.

ETA: the more I think about it, I wonder how many others mininterperet this statute.  I'm not thinking it's a bad thing....if fact it'll keep people out of my backyard.
