Spent the afternoon at my range today.( CJRPC ) I was there from Noon till 4:00PM. Not many people as it was pretty hot.

First guy to show up was a fellow in his early 60's shooting an M1 Carbine. I asked if it was a Plainfield Machine or an Iver Johnson as I noticed the metal handguard. His reply was Iver Johnson. I asked if it was registered and he looked at me like he had no idea what I was talking about. I politely informed him that under NJ law it was considered an assault rifle and if it wasn't registered before May of 1991 it was illegal to own.  His response was a thank you and he continued to shoot it.

Next guy to show up was a 40 something fellow with his young Son. He was shooting a SIG 556. No big deal other then it had the factory folding stock and flashhider.

I politely informed him it that in it's present form it was illegal to own in NJ. He was nice enough but said he purchased it in PA. and the dealer told him it was good to go. Not 100% sure if he believed me or not but continued shooting more then 100 rounds through it before leaving. This guy was a total noob to firearms as far as I could tell.

Sad to say these two unsuspecting fellows could be the next Brain Aitkin's in NJ as both were clueless about NJ firearms laws.

Don't think this is a "rare" occurrence at CJRPC. I've seen this happen many times since Florio's ban. The casual gun owner is usually clueless when it comes the the intricacy's of NJ gun laws.

Thanks to decades of clueless NJ Politicians making nonsensical laws that infringe on our 2A rights these two fellows could loose everything they both worked very hard for in their lives.

I'll be back in the morning. Can't wait to see who shows up next.

I see the same thing all the time at a range in PA I frequent.  Most of the people I meet there are also from NJ, and the amount of things I see that could land them in trouble is astounding.  Like you, I try and politely mention that they could find themselves in a world of hurt back in occupied territory.  Reactions range from shock, to acknowledgement (Yeah, I know...  but it's OK - I keep these hidden when I'm at home).

I am forever picking my jaw up off the ground, wishing them good luck, and continuing on with my shooting.  If these people only knew the reality of their predicament .

Hey, all we can do is try, right?

I used to be a DANGEROUS criminal who should have been locked in prison because I routinely transported unloaded pistols and ammo in separate compartments of the same range bag; with the magazines loaded on the way to the range.

I thought it was legal because the bag was to the rear of the 3rd row of seats in my van and the mags were with the other ammo separate from the pistols.  Then about 2 years ago, a helpful person like yourself explained the error in my ways.  Now, I am a law-abiding pillar of my community and I transport my pistols in a separate case from my ammo and my mags are at all times unloaded.

We are not born with this knowledge and the statutes are convoluted and confusing.  I certainly appreciated the advice that I got from a stranger.  Keep it up.  Share the knowledge.  We are all in this together.

i hear ya.. im still learning the gun laws in NJ. I shoot in PA and sometimes mixed comments confuse me.  for example a week of so someone told me I should get a flashider for my wasr and I was pretty sure it wasn't allowed in NJ so I just brushed it off.  I shoot with my friend and he stores some mags for me at his house, I would never dare bring them over the border.

My local range isn't that bad, but yes, I feel as if you do anything other than bench rest shoot at no more than 1 shot per minute, the range nazis stare at you and wonder what you are doing.  God forbid you try to shoot offhand or do rapid fire.  And don't think about bringing anything other than paper targets.

If I really want to shoot .223 at 100 yards though, I endure the environment.

However for really fun range trips I head to the WMA.  Shooting with my .22 dedicated upper is great fun.  You can shoot at whatever you want, cans, spinners, golf balls, clays.  Mag dumps are a great stress reliever.

There is no "pretty sure" about it.  With absolute certainty: NOT ALLOWED!

They do make legal muzzle breaks that "look" like flash suppressors.  I saw one first hand at Range 14 about 2 weeks ago.  I don't remember what the guy said about who makes them or where to get one, but it looked really cool.  Hopefully, someone will post a reference.

Wildlife Management Area.  These are areas set up for people (hunters in mind) can keep in practice with .22, muzzleloaders and shotguns.  It is basically a free range that is open from dawn till dusk and has no on-duty personnel.  You can just to there and hang out shooting.  The only requirement is that one of the people in your party needs to have a valid hunting license.

I got one just so that I could use the range.

The one I go to is in South Jersey and is the Makepeace Lake WMA.  More info here:
http://www.state.nj.us/dep/fgw/ranges.htm

I never see this mentioned on this board, so I wonder how many NJ people really know about these.  Of course when I go, there are usually several other people there.

I go to the one in Millville, NJ often. I bring my .17HMR, smoke pole, and my Citori Lightening/clays and make an afternoon or morning out of it. I love being left alone to just do my thing.

As a reminder, please clean up your stuff when you leave. Since there is no hired help, it's up to the shooters to police up. I put a trash can out there once... Won't be doing that again...

Posting picture of yourself with illegal magazines, to cite one actual event in particular, and bringing a shitstorm down on you is one thing...  but I doubt anyone's going to stake out a gun club because of an online post about some anonymous person possessing a banned assault firearm.

Just in case I'm wrong....  I was at many different ranges in NJ yesterday...  from Cherry Ridge down to Cape May County Clay Shooters....  and in one of those places, I think I might have seen someone with a 30-round AK magazine.  They said they'd be back sometime in the next 180 days.

My son has a S&W M&P15-22.  He likes to use full-length 10-round factory-made magazines that look like 30-rounders because he thinks they look cool.  Nearly every time we go to the range, I notice people  giving my son a double-take followed by a long stare as they count through his first couple mags.  So, I bought him a bunch of half-length 10-round mags.  Now, no one pays him any attention.

It appears as if the “conspicuousness” of compliance is just as important as compliance.

Yup, this is why I do not use blocked magazines, I will only go to the range with cut down mags just to avoid having any issues based on their appearance.  Although I will admit, there was a time period that I brought an upper that had not yet had its muzzle brake pinned on to the range and did some shooting with it.  The lug was lobbed and it had a branson comp on it, but it was not permanently attached yet, no one walked over and attempted to unscrew it to make sure but I would be lying if I said I wasn't nervous. I've since had the thing pinned and now I can go to the range worry free, I cannot wait till the day that I relocate.  First thing I am going to do is finally buy that MAC-10 45 style semi auto pistol that I've always wanted and an SP-1 carbine with the aluminum telescoping stock.  Ah what it must be like to live in a free state, I can only imagine!  I'm so jealous, I hate it here!

We don't need the govt or you watching our every move. I'll abide by the laws if I want to and face the punishments if I chose not to.

Guess what? I rip the tags off all of my mattresses'. . I don't recycle . I have a pre-ban assault toilet that flushes 6 gallons per flush . And I'm currently stocking up on the evil incandescent light bulbs of death.

COME AND TAKE IT

God help us all!!!

Well, that's one route to take. The facts are, that people breaking gun laws isn't a ever good thing generally. Its always a bad idea for the one breaking the law, and in certain states, it can be bad for every gun owner. Of course the responsibility lies with each person, and in the end they're going to do what they want.

I've been re-re-re-reading Unintended Consequences these past few days, and recall a phrase that's a perfect fit here:

"Couldn't pull a needle out of his ass with a tractor"

I don't recall reading about ANYONE being "ratted out"...  where are you getting that from?  I read about someone expressing their exasperation at either people's ignorance of NJ's laws, or their DELUSIONAL belief that, "ah - nothing's gonna happen to me".  In the end, we CARE about the rights and freedoms of EVERY person we meet at the ranges...  none of us want to see ANYBODY smacked in the face with the harsh reality of NJ's judicial view of firearms ownership.

Is that such a bad thing?

Others would simply stand there...  "minding their own business"....  while perhaps a new shooter, who doesn't know the laws, proceeds to get himself arrested for nothing more than simple ignorance.  Yeah, way to go, chief...  maybe had you MENTIONED to the guy that the dealer in PA didn't know NJ's laws, and the threaded-on flash suppressor on the end of the barrel could land him in state prison, the poor fellow wouldn't be under indictment right now.  BUT HEY....  no skin off of YOUR nose, right?  After all...  you were just "minding your own business".  It's people like THAT that make me sick....

...  followed closely by people who move out of this state, and then proceed to tell everyone who still lives here, every chance they get, what a stupid thing they're doing by not packing up and leaving, as well.  Know what I mean?

im all for giving advice Bro, but Blabbin anything all over in the open isn't good.

i bet  it was just a 1022 dressed up in a M1 Carbine kit, and the stock didn't fold... yea... when i used to shoot in that Communist state,
i NEVER saw these so called banned guns... and if i did, im Not at Liberty to speak about it, LOL. i wouldn't even know what one looked like.

you'll be strokin all the short barrel, suppressed goodness any man can handle , and if you want to wank it, there is a nice creek
