| Anyone out there know of a dealer that is willing to do a transfer without charging me an arm and a leg? |

When you get a gun from an FFL, they're transferring it to you. It's the same thing as walking in to a gun store out of state and buying a gun. It's fin as long as you fill out the NJ certificate of eligibility and get the background check done. The only thing you can't buy out of state and bring home with you is a handgun.
Q: From whom may an unlicensed person acquire a firearm under the GCA? A person may only acquire a firearm within the person’s own State, except that he or she may purchase or otherwise acquire a rifle or shotgun, in person, at a licensee’s premises in any State, provided the sale complies with State laws applicable in the State of sale and the State where the purchaser resides. A person may borrow or rent a firearm in any State for temporary use for lawful sporting purposes. [18 U.S.C. 922(a)(3) and (5), 922(b)(3), 27 CFR 478.29 and 478.30] Edited to add cut and paste from BATFE web site. |

Quoted:
If you are transferring to NY and then driving over the border to NJ where you reside, that is illegal. The firearm was transferred to NY and there it shall stay. Correct me if I am wrong. I live in Somerset, NJ and am willing to drive 45 minutes or so. That also means it would be illegal for him to drive to the state where the firearm originally came from to pick it up there? I think not! This is the same thing. It doesn't matter where the sale takes place on a rifle/shotgun. So long as the sale complies with laws of the place of sale, and the home state of the transferee. An FFL is an FFL after all. They are both going to be doing the same thing. |

Quoted: Myself and friends have bought dozens of rifles and shotguns from either Cabelas or other in PA. As long as the rifle or shotgun is legal in Nj, there's no issue, correct? Legality is an issue when you possess certain firearms IN the state of NJ. You may acquire any configured firearm as long as it never crosses the border in your possession. |
