LONG time shooter that took a break for ten+ years. Since then - laws have changed and I need some basic info what I can legally buy and shoot here in NJ - and then what mods are allowed, and which are not.
Thanks guys... Stu |

I'm a "youngin"...27, so I haven't even been allowed to buy guns for 10 years. So take what I say with a grain of salt. My dad was never into firearms, so it's not as though I grew up with them. But, I would imagine that things haven't gotten any more restrictive in the last 10 years (save the one handgun a month law). If you're really worried just stick to buying stuff in state (though that said make sure you read up on the AWB for AR's because I've seen plenty in stores with flash suppressors on them which is a no no)....
I can't think of any major new restrictions since I've started playing with guns which is about the window you took off. So.....you should be good to go. Oh, and welcome to the board. |

Thanks guys... Ok - so flash supressors are a no-no. What about a muzzle comp? Whats going on with collapsable stocks? Comps are brakes are fine as long as they are welded and pinned. Collapsable stocks must be made to be non-collapsable, usually by drilling and pinning. |

So - if I order the new(er) Colt MT6400C I should be cool? http://www.coltsmfg.com/products-c6-q9-Colt_Rifles.aspx
According to the NJ State Police website: "The Colt Match Target Rifle, based on the manufacturer’s specifications, is a new line of rifles and is not part of the AR-15 series, and thus, is not prohibited under N.J.S.A.2 C: 39-1w(1). Although this new rifle, may resemble the Colt AR-15, there have been substantial changes to the firearm, including the receiver which is not identical to an AR-15 receiver. In addition, because of changes in the configuration of the firearm, the Colt Match Target Rifle is not substantially identical to a prohibited firearm and prohibited under this classification. " Blah, blah, blah...........

Anything you order must be post ban, otherwise if not it needs to be sent to someone who can modify it to be NJ legal |

All of those appear gtg so long as all the rifles do not have bayonet lugs. Looks like colt takes the win for ban state compliance with its lineup. EDIT: Am I missing something? I dont even see their evil rifles on the website. What gives? |

I noticed that also... I think they've split off their law enforcement products into it's own website. Next question: What are my first mods for accuracy and smooth function? Who is THE BEST in the area that can do world-class work? I used to have all of my work done at Behlert Custom Gun - but that was a long time ago....... |

It can all be done by yourself, just gotta figure it out and do a little research. As far as mods for accuracy and smooth function go, it depends on what your looking for. Railed forearms that provide free floating barrels can increase accuracy, muzzle compensator's can reduce recoil and muzzle climb, different ammo and barrel twist rate can be a factor, shitty ammo versus quality ammo versus reloads can factor in. Accessories are just accessories for looks most of the time but some can be beneficial. Vertical grips and provide stability. Certain stocks have certain features for comfortability. Some barrels are thinner or heavier or have contouring. Back up or flip up iron sights incase your optic fails or simply just want to switch. Some optic mounts have quick detach features for quick on and off. I can go on forever. There is tons of shit out there than can give you the "accuracy and smooth function" you are looking for. I suggest visiting the site sponsors at the top and shopping around. Also visit the rest of the forum. Also i highly suggest not going cheap when it comes to parts and accessories for these rifles because they will give you the opposite of what you want. You get what you pay for. Stay away from shit like TAPCO or NCSTAR. You will eventually figure out the top tier brands and items. |

I think they moved out to PA a long time ago but I haven't seen or heard from them in years. Steve at ADCO Fireams does very good work on AR's. He's fast and very reasonable. |

Austin passed away two years ago...
I used to shoot with Frank a few times a week. I'd drive all the way from Northern NJ down to Monmouth Junction and just hang out and soak up info. Getting to play with Class III stuff was a blast and they taught me basic 'smithing skills so I could have pride knowing that I had done it myself. Austin sat with me for hours watching and guiding. He was a great man. I actually DROVE with them to Columbia MO for the Bianchi Cup one year and we had a blast (literally). IPSC was in it's infancy and we had a ton of fun making the rounds to all the events in the tri-state area.. Those were the days. Simple n easy. Now - I'm getting back into "the hobby" but all the new laws regarding ownership have me really limited in what I'd like to buy and build. I'm gonna ask alot of questions - so pls be kind.
