Hey guys,
I'm going to be moving from TN to NJ in Jan and I was wondering about some specific gun laws. First of all if you get me any details on assault weapons laws (i.e evil features bans). The reason I ask is, I have an AR-15 with all the evil features and a bayonet lug and would love to be able to take it with me. Also are there any guns that are banned outright (i.e AR-15 or other assault weapons)? Is there any way to acquire a concealed carry permit? If anyone has a link to the DOJ website pertaining to gun laws that would be really helpful as well. Thanks for any help you can give. Adam |

If you want to give yourself a headache, you can go to the state's website and look up the statutes for yourself.
2C:39 & 2C:58 are the pertinent chapters But to answer your question efficiently, NO bayo lugs, NO flash suppressors(muzzle breaks are ok if they are permanently attached__welded or 1100 degree silver solder), NO collapsible stocks, NO mags over 15 round capacity(for handguns as well), NO AR15 by name(the receiver cannot have AR15 stamped anywhere on it, but the clones are all legal) And before anyone else says it, if it's at all possible, move to PA and commute for work, they don't have all the bullshit laws over there. |

You've got all the relevant info. on "assault firearms" here already. As to your CCW question, the short answer is "no". NJ only issues to security guards, private detectives, or anyone with major political connections. If you can't afford to drop $50K to someone's political war chest, you can forget about ever getting an NJ permit to carry.
As for a website with the NJ laws, the ATF maintains a list of laws by state, which is fairly up-to-date: http://www.atf.gov/firearms/statelaws/23rdedition/newjersey.pdf |

Adam Coincidentally, my name is Adam...and I unfortunately made the move from TN to NJ about 4 years ago. Leave every fun firearm you've ever had behind...they're not welcome here, also leave your God-given rights and self respect at the door, and don't forget the lube.....you'll need it. My black rifle babies still live in TN, because I didn't want them to get aborted by the douche-squad that rules this land. |

Guys,
Thanks for the help. I wish I could live in PA and commute, but I'm working with Unilever and my office is just across the river from NYC. That would be an awful long commute... Sadly the job and experience is one which I can't turn down (selling my soul I know). On the upside I may only be there for a year and hopefully I'll be able to take my fun guns to the state that I get relocated to next year, three cheers for rotational programs. Now I have to try and find a place to shoot that's somewhat close to where I'm going to be (Tenafly/ North Bergen Co.). If you guys have any words of wisdom as to where I can find a good rifle and pistol range feel free to speak up. I'll be making an additional post regarding that as well. I'm thinking my next fun gun is going to be an FAL with an ACOG. Granted I can only use a 15 round mag in NJ but I think a fixed stock and preban barrel should be legal in that God forsaken state. Thanks again, Adam |

"pre-ban" means nothing in NJ. Doesn't apply here.
You can shave the bayonet lug off yourself with a dremel or something. Or send the upper to ADCO and have them NJ-ify it with a de-lug and perm attached brake. You can even send them the lower and have them pin the stock in place in you don't want to swap out the stock for an A2 or something. As far as ranges close to Bergen: Bullet Hole in Belleville, NJ - http://www.bulletholenj.com/ shop with indoor range. 10 bays - 23yds. $13 bux and hour if I remember correctly. Cherry Ridge in Highland Lakes, NJ - http://www.anjrpc.org/cherry_ridge.htm High power 200/300 yd rifle range, 50/100 yd rifle range, 25/50 yd pistol range, silhouette range, shotgun range (informal clays). $190 first year/130 renewal. |
| once you cross the river Rhine into New Germany the US Constitution no longer exists. If its fun, its illegal, you want to enjoy the beach? better pay up to get on and you should be wearing some kind of kevlar flip flops to protect your feet from NY's needle dumping. Fireworks you ask? nope.....sure you can get em in PA...but the SS is watching so if youre gonna bring those awesome TN fireworks here, better stock up and bring them now...June and July are bad months for that, the SS is all over looking for it. one thing you can do if you have a collapsable stock is find the best length you use or like the most and permanently epoxy it in that position....thats how i bought mine in NJ, looks like a collapsable stock but its permanently fixed....welcome to the No Fun State |

Dude stay away it sucks here. Yeah I'll second that. There seem to be more of these "ask the locals" posts lately. We all want out, and to places like TN. NY city has the same high sales tax as TN + a high income tax that TN lacks. Then throw on oppressive property taxes, and I don't see why these guys think that they'll come out ahead. |

Governor Corzine Signs Bill Increasing Penalties for Possession of Illegal Firearms
"The bill, S1304/A3276, upgrades the unlawful possession of a machine gun or assault firearm to a second-degree crime. Currently, the offense is a third-degree crime under New Jersey law. Under the new law, illegal possession of a machine gun or assault weapon is punishable by five to ten years in prison and/or a $150,000 fine." Stop on your way to target practice, go to jail. Under New Jersey's new law, possession of BB gun merits three-year sentence NJ State Police FAQ’s firearms Association of New Jersey Rifle and Pistol Clubs NJ NRA affiliate New Jersey Coalition for Self Defense Firearms Purchaser Identification Card is needed to purchase pistol ammunition and in some cases, depending on store policy, rifle/shotgun ammunition. BB guns are firearms No Trunk Guns. |

Well, thanks guys for the additional info. Glad I only have to deal with this state for a year. Though I may just be leaving the country all together next year (Brazil or Canada look like my next stop). Trust me I realize that Canada is much worse than NJ and Brazil, well at least there are a lot of gorgeous beaches and women for a 23 year old guy to enjoy. Anyway, I keep looking for this "list" of banned guns in NJ. Any idea where I can find it? I googled it and everything keeps bringing me back to NJ laws.
Thanks again |
