Do straight pull AR-15's (.223) need/have a buffer spring?

I guess so. The spring that goes in the buffer tube/stock tube on a semi- or full-auto.

It's needed, and it also makes a quite annoying "sproiiiing" sound if you're using a snapcap. Makes it sound like an airsoft gun

A smear of grease on the spring will stop that

Taking the spring out stops it as well.

I shall take it out and rub it on what remains of my hair forthwith!

Oddly enough, I'll be taking the spring out to do the above. I might put it back again though, just so I can tell everyone that I've got one of those AR's with a spring in it (that no longer goes "sprooooing") It doesn't have the shoulder thing that goes up though. At least I don't think so.
