Just wondering if anyone out there has or knows someone selling a 1984 or 1985 defender 90, 110, or 130 with a 2.5TD, 200tdi or 300tdi.  I'm looking for something cheap to import over to the US.  A truck located in the south would be best since it would be leaving from Southhampton, but for the right price I would have one carried down form the north.  I don't really care about paint, dings or interior.  It just has to run and drive.   I found a few decent trucks on ebay, but figured a check here to see what might be sitting around in your backyards.    PM me with what you have.  Thanks!

Why didn't you post this here?

Would you like one with a cherry on top and with a ribbon tied around it? Why a limey Landrover when there are so many super Jeep whatevers etc to be had for next to nothing?

May I compliment our American friend for his choice of vehicle, far superior to any thing the Yanks make.

Good luck on your search.

Absolutely. First class trucks. Far better than any us made jeep. Even guaranteed to leave oil on the gunplumbers driveway

I don't think cheap and Defender go in the same sentence. I was looking at buying one a while back and even a 1989 one in OK condition was £2k

Easily the best 4x4 in terms of performance and ability. But reliability is another matter.

They do need a lot more preventative maintenance than most vehicles, but if looked after they're as reliable as any other car.

The diesel engines aren't too bad, it's the petrol engines that die when a bit of fluff gets sucked into them. The main problem with Landies is that they rust easy, at least the ones I see around here do.

Again with a bit of preventative maintenance they last for years. Let's face it most Defenders unless you live in Chelsea have a hard working life, I'd bet money on any other Yank/Jap 4x4 not lasting as long as a Defender doing the same job.

Reliability

  • Land Rover marque ranked last on the US J.D. Power and Associates Vehicle Dependability Survey for 2005 (published 8 July 2005) (Kia second last). This is the fourth year that it has been in the last or second to last place in the survey. This study was based on responses from more than 55,000 US based original owners of 2000 model year cars and light trucks at three years of ownership.[27] In 2004, it narrowly dethroned Kia as the least reliable nameplate, but swapped places in 2005. (Kia last, Land Rover 2nd last).

  • In August 2006, Land Rover was rated in last place in the J.D. Power US reliability survey, which looked at three year ownership experience for 2003 model year cars.[28] Land Rover acknowledged the problems and attributed them to electrical issues following the change from BMW to Jaguar supplied engines.

  • Tied for last (with Hummer and Porsche) in the 2006 Consumer Reports (US) car reliability survey. It was only one of six makes that did not have a model whose reliability was "Good" or above (joined by Mercedes-Benz, Volkswagen and Jaguar); its highest-rating car was the LR3, which got a rating of "Poor". In addition, 56 percent of people who owned a 2003 Range Rover reported problems, as did 61 percent of 2002 Freelander owners—both the highest among all cars for that model year.

  • Ranked second-to-last in the 2007 Consumer Reports (US) car reliability survey. (Mercedes-Benz took the bottom place.) In the same survey, the LR3/Discovery with a V8 engine was ranked the second least reliable SUV in the midsized category. (The 2006 model year M-class of Mercedes-Benz took the last place in that category.)

    • It also was ranked as one of the 3 least reliable over the last 10 years in 2007.[29]

  • Land Rover Discovery 6th-from-the-bottom of 100 models for reliability in an Auto Express 2002 survey in the UK.

They imported defender 90s to the US in 1994, 1995, and 1997.  You can expect to pay $20,000 to $30,000 for one of these.  They only imported 110's in 1993 and they run $40,000 and above. None of the defenders imported had diesels.   We can import anything 25 years old or older so your trucks are getting kind of common.  Once a truck hits american soil it jumps in value.  A $2000 worn out defender that seems like junk to you is worth $10,000 or more once it rolls of the boat, especially if it has a TDI in it.   I am on my forth Land Rover now so I am well aware of the work that goes into one.  I have always wanted a defender and as a local goverment employee I can't justify spending half my yearly salary on a US truck.   I could get a decent TD 90 off ebay for less than 2000GBP so that's what i'm looking for.

It's the same here in Germany too, but the right had drive is a pain in the arse, Now I know why I couldn't get one about a year ago .

Sorry to be unpatriotic - but Land Cruiser FTW

We rented an old one and drove around Fraser Island in Queensland like lunatics (just like everyone else had done with it previously) and it was faultless both on the roads and on beachs/tracks/places where we swore to the nice hire company we wouldn't take it.

If I had to buy a 4 X 4 to use as a 4 X 4 then it would be my first choice

and that is because  nearly 80% of the defenders are owned by the people (farmers) who do not do any maintenance on their land  rovers.....buy it, use it for 10-15 years and run it to the ground...I dont see any other vehicle lasting this long without any maintenance........

I would not deny that the Defender series are still outstanding utility vehicles, and occasionally my vehicle of choice if I go into dodgy terrain. However, it is 2010 for flip's sake! Why don't they fit a normal human form? Why do you have to drive solely left handed with your right elbow resting on the door, balancing on your arse bones with your knees round your ears? Why are the washers & wipers so shit? Why are they so sodding noisy?...and cold, and expensive.

I borrowed a Defender a few years back for a day. It was a brand new 110 County from the LR loan fleet. The electric windows were already broken - every time you pressed any of the window buttons the 20A fuse blew...

I've always liked Defenders, but when it came down to real life buying something I bought a Toyota Landcruiser. It's 15 years old and nothing has gone wrong with it, other than damage caused by other people. (ie side window smashed by some nob head).

It's a comfortable drive, spacious to be in and has no bother off road, though I've no requirement for hardcore off-roading with winches high lift jacks and snorkels. Would need a change of tyres for that.

The 3 litre Turbo diesel it has is a solid and powerful engine.

I'd have a Landy, but that would never be as a main vehicle, they're just too cramped in the cabin, unreliable and not a nice drive. My choice would be old school military, no doors, windows or roof purely for fun.

Check out Witham SV, they have some interesting Landy kit knocking around from MOD disposal etc. Or maybe just get a Bedford 4X4, with a crane, always handy.

I think it's the fact that they aren't as common over here as over there that makes them so desirable.  I want one for off roading not to drive around everyday.  My discovery takes the full beating now.

Yep. No one here buys a defender because they think it's the best choice. They are bought because they are uncommon and interesting!
