| Just wondering if anyone out there has or knows someone selling a 1984 or 1985 defender 90, 110, or 130 with a 2.5TD, 200tdi or 300tdi. I'm looking for something cheap to import over to the US. A truck located in the south would be best since it would be leaving from Southhampton, but for the right price I would have one carried down form the north. I don't really care about paint, dings or interior. It just has to run and drive. I found a few decent trucks on ebay, but figured a check here to see what might be sitting around in your backyards. PM me with what you have. Thanks! |

Why didn't you post this here?
Would you like one with a cherry on top and with a ribbon tied around it? Why a limey Landrover when there are so many super Jeep whatevers etc to be had for next to nothing? Tony |

Quoted: Quoted: Easily the best 4x4 in terms of performance and ability. But reliability is another matter. They do need a lot more preventative maintenance complete replacement of chassis, subframes and other major components than most vehicles, but if looked after they're as reliable as any other car. The diesel engines aren't too bad, it's the petrol engines that die when a bit of fluff gets sucked into them. The main problem with Landies is that they rust easy, at least the ones I see around here do. Again with a bit of preventative maintenance they last for years. Let's face it most Defenders unless you live in Chelsea have a hard working life, I'd bet money on any other Yank/Jap 4x4 not lasting as long as a Defender doing the same job. Andy. |

Would you like one with a cherry on top and with a ribbon tied around it? Why a limey Landrover when there are so many super Jeep whatevers etc to be had for next to nothing? They imported defender 90s to the US in 1994, 1995, and 1997. You can expect to pay $20,000 to $30,000 for one of these. They only imported 110's in 1993 and they run $40,000 and above. None of the defenders imported had diesels. We can import anything 25 years old or older so your trucks are getting kind of common. Once a truck hits american soil it jumps in value. A $2000 worn out defender that seems like junk to you is worth $10,000 or more once it rolls of the boat, especially if it has a TDI in it. I am on my forth Land Rover now so I am well aware of the work that goes into one. I have always wanted a defender and as a local goverment employee I can't justify spending half my yearly salary on a US truck. I could get a decent TD 90 off ebay for less than 2000GBP so that's what i'm looking for. |

It's the same here in Germany too, but the right had drive is a pain in the arse, Now I know why I couldn't get one about a year ago Tony |

Sorry to be unpatriotic - but Land Cruiser FTW
We rented an old one and drove around Fraser Island in Queensland like lunatics (just like everyone else had done with it previously) and it was faultless both on the roads and on beachs/tracks/places where we swore to the nice hire company we wouldn't take it. If I had to buy a 4 X 4 to use as a 4 X 4 then it would be my first choice |

Andy. and that is because nearly 80% of the defenders are owned by the people (farmers) who do not do any maintenance on their land rovers.....buy it, use it for 10-15 years and run it to the ground...I dont see any other vehicle lasting this long without any maintenance........ my two pence worth!!!!!!!! |

I would not deny that the Defender series are still outstanding utility vehicles, and occasionally my vehicle of choice if I go into dodgy terrain. However, it is 2010 for flip's sake! Why don't they fit a normal human form? Why do you have to drive solely left handed with your right elbow resting on the door, balancing on your arse bones with your knees round your ears? Why are the washers & wipers so shit? Why are they so sodding noisy?...and cold, and expensive. |

I've always liked Defenders, but when it came down to real life buying something I bought a Toyota Landcruiser. It's 15 years old and nothing has gone wrong with it, other than damage caused by other people. (ie side window smashed by some nob head).
It's a comfortable drive, spacious to be in and has no bother off road, though I've no requirement for hardcore off-roading with winches high lift jacks and snorkels. Would need a change of tyres for that. The 3 litre Turbo diesel it has is a solid and powerful engine. I'd have a Landy, but that would never be as a main vehicle, they're just too cramped in the cabin, unreliable and not a nice drive. My choice would be old school military, no doors, windows or roof purely for fun. Check out Witham SV, they have some interesting Landy kit knocking around from MOD disposal etc. Or maybe just get a Bedford 4X4, with a crane, always handy. |

Quoted: I think it's the fact that they aren't as common over here as over there that makes them so desirable. I want one for off roading not to drive around everyday. My discovery takes the full beating now. Yep. No one here buys a defender because they think it's the best choice. They are bought because they are uncommon and interesting! |
