Yesterday, while visiting the Leeds Armouries, I received a phone call to say that Dale had been involved
in a serious accident, nothing life threatening but he had a very serious leg injury. On arrival at the hospital, it became apparent he had a severely broken leg amongst other knocks and scrapes. His leg is badly broken below the knee, and he has sever cartridge and tendon damage, he cannot recall the accident, but the surgeon and registrar think that the injury was obtained by his lower leg going forward at the knee up to 90 degrees. He is being operated on at 13.30hrs this afternoon and has been told he will endure 3 months of rehabilitation on this injury. I have just returned home since arriving at the hospital at 15.00 yesterday for a SS&S. They will only be operating on the broken bones today, ligament and tendon damage will be treated if a couple of weeks. Its Dale birthday tomorrow, so not much to look forward to there He has 4 loves in life, Army cadets, shooting, fishing and BMX bike racing, so not alt for him to do for a while. I will keep you informed of his progress, I am off back to the hospital shortly, and wont return home again until tomorrow. I just thought I would let you all know |

As far as I know he was riding his bike on a cycleway, crossed someone coming the other direction
and his le hit a fence post as he was riding along, his leg got caught somehow and he was thrown from the bike and left unconscious [:// He's been sedated since he arrived at casualty, and I don't know alot more ATM. |

Kid's what are they like, you'll see this time next year it'll be a bad memory and he'll have a few scars to impress his mate's with. Get well soon. Tony This is true Part of growing up is spending a week or two in hospital......to repair damage done - I know I spent a few periods of my mis-spent youth in the local A&E department. I was out of commission for nearly a year with a smashed knee cap - I've had several broken ribs, collar bones and more stitches that I care to count. I forsee a certain Timlad shopping for a new games console over the coming weeks for Timlad's Lad
Give Dale our best wishes Tim.....We wish him a full and speedy recovery...... and look forward to seeing him out shooting again soon. Keep us posted |

Thanks for the kind wishes and IM's, they are all appreciated.
He has had surgery this afternoon, and I have returned home for a couple of hours with no 2 and 3 sons. I am going back later to stay the night so he doesn't have to wake up on his birthday on his own. Surgery went well, he has had everything put back in place, and now needs to learn to walk on crutches before he can come home, the pysio's tried to get him up an hour after the op, but there was no way he could walk more than a couple of steps, they will be trying again later this evening, hopefully tomorrow or Saturday he may be allowed home. Its going to be a long haul we have been told as the Tibular is broken next to his knee cap and this has dislodged the growth plate. We wont know what damage he has to his tendons and liguarments for a couple of weeks yet, I will keep you posted. I will show him this thread when he does get home, for now thank you to all of you |

Sorry to hear that Tim, I wish him all the best for a speedy recovery.
It's quite amazing what they can do nowadays. I smashed my left leg up really badly about 10 years ago in a motorbke smash, bones, tendons & ligaments, and they sorted that lot out pretty well. |

Well, I got Dale home now and he would like to thank all of you for the kind comments.
He has 6 weeks now in plaster, and then will endure some pretty intensive pysio, the only real problem we have ATM is that he has badly damaged the growth plate under his knee and this may result in growth problems, but that is a 'worst case' scenario Now for my first task to help him out as I suppose all dads would, I'm off out on my paper round
I would also like to thank everyone for the kind words and IM's and offers of DVD's and magazines for Dale to keep him occupied. |

Hi Tim Glad to hear he's home and on the road to recovery. I live just round the corner from where I used to do my paper-round as a kid (On my Raleigh Chopper)...That round paid for my first ever rifle, a BSA Airsporter S....which I still have. Cheers Steven I did my paper round on my Raleigh Grifter a Webley Tempest |

You had bike's, shesh I roughed it, did two paper rounds one in the morning and an evening one too, all on foot......
As to saving, well no I couldn't do much of that as I had to give half of the money to my mum as house keeping, and that as a kid. Also used to help the milkman at the weekend after my paper round..... and had to give half of that money to my mum as well. Oh well guess I lucked out, not to bother, better luck next time. How's the lad doing? Tony |

Thanks Tony I used to go milking cows 5 mornings a week before school aswell as the evening paper round, and I went spud bashing and bale carting in season, theres probably laws to prevent it nowadays, but it did me no harm, ( I say with a twich |

What's the latest on Dale, Tim? He went to school yesterday, only to be told by his head of year that he could not attend school in his wheelchair as his leg being outstreched is a health and saftey issue as someone may get tripped over causing injury. I told them thats fine, providing his education is your responsibility, not mine and asked them what they intended to do If I kept him away from school, they would soon be breathing down my neck ![]()
They backed down saying they would moniter the situation, if he came to school on crutches that would be fine, but its not an option as the weight of his cast is so that it causes pain after standing for too long. I'd like to get him down our range an Saturday, and get him shooting from the bench. We will see how it goes. |

Sitting at home is not the best way to recover, it is too easy to start thinking and getting discouraged. Best wishes to Dale and all the family, it's hard for him but let's all remember that having a family member in a bad way is also very stressful for everyone else. |

Managed to get Dale bown to the range yesterday and got some shooting in from the bench, not to much
