Hm. So.. Yeah. Starting to look into joining. Always had that nagging but put it down to that stupid childish "Ooh! explosions!" mentality.. Finally seem to have grown up a little and started taking it seriously. Interest is mainly infantry type stuff*. Or Artillery, Maybe. (think that one might be the dying screams of the "Ooh! explosions!" phase) Just wondering if anyone has any experience / Advice ? *- think that limits it to Army / Marines and maybe Air Force ? Just seems like there are that many sites / options.. everyone says something different etc. Family isn't really into military service so that kinda limits the options for reasonable / rational people to talk to.. All I get from them is the "You could die! YOU MIGHT BE SENT TO WAR!" stuff.. No real advice or such coming from there. Urgh. |

I spent 10 years in an Armoured corps Regiment, and would do it all again if they let me. Most of my service time was spent here in Germany which probably explains why I ended up living here. I served in a relatively peaceful time, the cold war year's, it was a busy time what with exercises and operational tour's of differing type's, but we didn't have the Afghanistan and Iraq tour's to contend with. Joining the TA will also mean that you stand a pretty good chance of spending some time in one or the other. I have the utmost respect for the women and men of our armed forces that are doing the hard work for neue arbeit. Go have a lurk at the ARRSE web site, they reflect some of the feelings in their posts. However you decide, I wish you all the best. Tony |

Being a military guy myself makes me a little biased, but I would highly recommend joining. It's definitely not all fun and games. But all in all, it's a very positive thing in one's life. I had been out of the Army for 6 years when 9-11 happened. I went back in and all I've done since is regret my 6 year absence. I just got back from my 3rd Iraq tour. Now that we've pretty much rolled em up there(though the media won't tell you), I'm looking forward to getting to Afghanistan next. Good luck with your choice. You can always join one of the U.S. branches as wellhe, we'd be glad to have you. But you can't do wrong with serving the UK either. |
| Oh. And BTW, I hear the "you could die" thing all the time. That's just a fact of life. A tree could fall on you. You could have a car accident. Any number of risks are involved with everyday life. Yes. Some do die in military service. But if you look at the odds, they're in your favor. I wouldn't worry about something like that. When it's your #'s up, you're going to go no matter what you're doing. |
