Anyone have any practical experience of shimming scope rings. Good idea, bad idea?

I'm looking to gain some elevation adjustment from a scope and am toying with inserting a .020 thou shim in the lower third of the ring, but I'm concerned there won't be sufficient contact with the scope tube so it may move under recoil or worse, bend/damage the scope tube.

Would I be better off lapping the rings?

it's a 30mm scope so Burris Signature Rings are out and it's not possible to adjust the base.

Burris do some rings where you can actually buy the shims 0.005, 0.010, 0.015 and 0.020 + and -  (Burris Signature series)....I've used them with and they have been OK so far. No movement provided you clamp em tight  Burris do 30mm Scope rings cos I use em on my leupold and Nightforce scopes.

Shimming in ordinary scope rings causes the rings and scope to be put inder uneven stresses and I've been advised that it is detrimental in the long run both to maintaining zero and to the scope and mounts (dunno if this is true or not). I've done it on air rifles with cheap scopes but I'd rather use something designed for it.

Hope it's of help

I've done this a few times, I use old photgraph negatives, I've never had a problem, but to be honest I've only used it short term.

I know about the Burris Rings but they only do the eccentric inserts for their 1" tube range...

................might be a job for the Dremelinator............

Do you have a gun that you haven't taken Dremel to yet ?

Try these (look a little lower down the page)

http://www.opticsplanet.net/burris-zee-signature-30mm-rifle-scope-mount-rings-for-weaver-bases.html

They come with +/-0.010 inserts in 30mm.....just do +0.010 on the rear and -0.010 on the front (or visa versa) and it should buy you the 0.020 you need...I've done it with one of mine and it worked for me.

I think it's OK and you won't do any harm

What gun and base/s are you working with?

Do not shim the rings - you will bend the scope tube. Maybe not enough to see, but enough to interfere with the scopes internal adjustments.

Use a sloped base or the 30mm Burris Signature rings. I use the Burris rings and recommend them.

No, they have all felt the kiss of the Dremel somewhere or other.........just like the car, gate, lawnmower, dog, cats, lizard, wife & kids (wife got quite worked up actually, something to do with 30,000rpm) .............

That's where i was going with my question...  Is it feasible on his rifle though?

These look like they'd do the trick thanks. Brownells site says they only do the +/- inserts for 1" tubes though. Do you know a UK supplier or did you order from Optics Planet?

Thanks!, that would do it too. Although the cost is higher and will put the scope even higher above the bore. Burris rings are looking the best option at the moment.

Just order the burris rings from optics planet. with the current exchange rate even with shipping and if you have to pay duty it will probably work out cheaper than buying them here - if anyone has them in stock. Optics planet are a reliable company. If you shim the rings you will mark the scope when you tighten it down, even if you don't bend it.

Have a look at these lot again. I've had plenty of bits from them including ARMS mounts & one of the MOA bases and never had a problem. I think it all comes down to which U.S. retailers can be bothered to get an export license from the State dept..

Brownells also do the Burris rings and you shouldn't have a problem getting then to send to U.K. either!

Brownells

They are wrong (not that it will help). There is a $100 US State Department exemption for exporting sporting arms parts (some AR parts don't count). Less than $100 = no export licence needed. That's why Brownells will ship stuff to the UK...

That was my understanding too...If Donald Rumdsfelt can ship shitloads of poison gas to Saddam Hussein, a pair of scope rings shouldn't be too much to ask.........

Try this guy

http://cz452.com/?

He doesn't list em but has got the burris 30mm with +/- inserts for me before.

(The $100 dollar exemption bit is true - loads of US exporters have told me about it)
