Lurker checking in...first post.hooting Can any of you point me in the direction of a list of ranges/clubs? Maybe you could add them to the ranges section on this site. Thanks in advance for any help. |

Thanks for the replies lads. I live in the West Midlands. Looks like Minsterley, Kingsbury and maybe Wedgenock are my closest. Have any of you been to these ranges? What are they like? Any details would be greatly appreciated. Also I've heard there is a place called Wednesbury Marksmans Club (Wednesbury is very close to where I live) does anybody know anything about this place. Sorry for all the questions, I'd just like some info before I start driving around and shelling out for membership. Again thanks for your time. |

Theres a few midlanders here Do you know what sort of shooting you'd like to do ? Gallery Rifle , Full-bore ? Minsterly - Don't bother Worcester Norton are an excellent club for gallery rifle/mini rifle/shotgun. They have their own range & club house. http://wnsc.co.uk/ Offas Dyke are a great club for MOD range bookings at outdoor ranges such as Kingsbury, LLansilin, Sennybridge etc http://www.offasdyke.surf3.net/ Wednesbury Marksman have their own indoor range, its 25m IIRC. Theres another club in B'ham with an indoor range, but I couldn't recommend them.... ![]() IM me if you have Q's Cheers Steven |
Thanks for the infohough As I'm new to all this can you give me an idea on ammo prices? .223 and .308 for example. And lastly how much cheaper is it to roll your own? |
Starts at about £20/100 for both types, depending on where you look. At those prices, it's really no cheaper to make your own

Wedgnock is my home range (literally half a mile away!) and it is one of the best range complexes outside of Bisley, but still under used. Check out the site for facilities. We have a 100m, 50m and 25m range, with abundant firing points. The place wasn't even used to capacity during the World Championships in 1997! so you can always get a lane. If you want to shoot Gallery Rifle, .22's and black powder there is no better place in the midlands to go. Its a great club, with a friendly bunch of guys, regular competitions in all disciplines, and a very knowledgeable Range Warden. There are contact details on the Website, or contact me for more information. Wedgnock have an Open Day on the first Sunday of every month, so you could come down on the next one, and have a look around. Members are always willing to let you have a go with their guns. Unfortunately you have just missed this one, but in September i could take a load of fun guns down for you to try if you want? Me and my dad also have an RFD, and keep very large stocks of firearms, ammunition and accessories (we have a very good selection of re-furbished No.4's atm) Jim ETA - if you want a good lever action rifle, don't even consider the Winchester! they are too complicated, and always break. Go for a Marlin 1894, (or a Uberti if you want to shell out the extra money), and you will get a gun that will be fun to shoot, and last for ever. You can't go wrong with a 10/22, no.4, AR15 (as long as you don't buy the Decade one) and BP revolver though! |

Worcester Norton have 2 25 yd & one 50 yd outdoor ranges and there are outdoor and indoor air weapon ranges. One off annual membership fee, no other range fees, and ranges open 6 1/2 days a week. Club morning on Sunday, usually some form of informal club comp on most Sundays. Mini rifle, lever action, blackpowder and a 50yd .22 comp. Offa's Dyke for longer range stuff and the chance to shoot at Sennybridge on reactive targets. We were shooting alongside West Midlands Marksmen Tuesday evening at Kingsbury and there's another Midland club called Five Towns who also shoot there. As Steve-UK said there at least three of us on here who shoot with Offa's, friendly bunch ETA Worcester Norton also has a club shop with some s/h guns.

My home range is Uttoxter Rifle Club The club is local and cheap to join. There is a 30m outdoor range that covers full-bore, rimfire and black powder. This is not too far away from you. This is probably one of the cheapest clubs anyone could join at £25 per year with no additional costs to visit (first year is £50). There is an understanding that ground work and maintenance is carried out by members to ensure its upkeep. Like Steven_uk said, I would look at other like offas who have a far greater selection of ranges to use. Uttoxeter I belive is affiliated and their members are allowed to attend the offas shoots. |

Hiya.hoot Another range to consider: Diggle Range, Just east of Manchester (Saddleworth) 100 - 1000yd in 100 yd increments, (4 ranges in total) and a reasonable contingent of PR/CSR shootists not to mention benchrest, F-TR, TR, tactical and other competition leagues. Good facilities and an overnight bunkhouse for them "wots not local". Basically there are quite a few ranges out there, and plenty of friendly types who will help you get to grips with the whole thing. Get yourself down to a local club, learn what it's about, do your probationary and if you like it get your FAC and away you go. People will advise you as you go and by the time you are ready to apply for your FAC you'll have a fair idea of what type of shooting you want to do. Starting rifle depends on the range - .22 rimfire/ .357 Marlin underlever for indoor. For outdoor longer range stuff I'd go for a .308 Remington 700 or equivalent, and since you have an interest I'd ask for .223/5.56mm on your ticket as well. Welcome aboard, enjoy the ride!!!! |
