I have taken this from the  NRA summer journal

"a new paragraph 230 has been added to the Bisley bible this year "defining normal dress" on the ranges. this has been added to the NRA rules to avoid adverse publicity such as has been levelled at the NRA in the past due to shooters walking around camp in full military dpm uniform, as if they were military personnel on duty.

where weather conditions warrant it such items as waterproof dpm  jacket and trousers are acceptable but full uniform should be worn only by military pesonnel who are on duty."

I always found the weight watchers navy seals on short siberia to be a little worrying anyway

Next they will start asking that everyone dresses up in shorts, t shirts and flip flops so as to appear fluffy and not scare the the Great British Sheeple…

This is a request from the Army, during the Civilian Service Rifle Competitions, it was difficult for the SASC (Army Range Staff) to tell those Officially Serving from the wannabes.

No-one needs to wear full DPM to shoot PR or Civ SR, unless you happen to be serving and on duty. There are plenty of other clothing options available.

having recently retired and hung up my DPM I can assure you it doesn't make you shoot any better although it is very kind to the fuller figure and doesn't show spilled food!!
perhaps those wannabes who feel the need to play soldier  could save their kit for their airsoft days

in short if your target doesn't shoot back you don't need to hide from it!!!!!!

I'm glad there is an exemption on the waterproofs.... The Goretex DPM jackets are pretty good and cheap as chips...

ETA:  I mentioned this rule to someone when I spotted it in the journal and was told that it had been around for a while in one form or another...

Is this so the SASC know who they can legitimately scream at without getting told to 'piss off'?

I did turn up one afternoon in Magnum boots, flektarn combat pants and parka, (and the AR of course)… it certainly got a 'reaction' from the chief range Nazi

… so I don't wear the parka now.

On a slightly more serious note, is it literally just DPM?, or other types of military/paramilitary camouflage pattern clothing. I know a lot of clubs have specific rules on this now. It is however unfortunate that military type clothing is by virtue of it's durability and weatherproofing often most suitable, and cheapest for outdoor shooting activities. I bought a surplus DPM jacket because it's good for walking the dog and bought an Arktis Sniper Smock, Rucksack and Hump because they were a damn good price (and haven't used any of it!), but usually shoot in casual or sports type clothing. What about the camo type hunting suits, non-military patterns, that civilian stalkers wear, are they banned too?

I would think that any clothing that makes you look like you are serving military would be a cause for concern... As you pointed out earlier, if some CSM sees what he thinks is one of his men dressed like a "shower of sh*t" and acts appropriately only to find it is civilian and is told to "piss off" etc etc ....

That would probably mean that wooly pullies worn with olive lightweights would be off the menu... as would olive lightweights, high lace issue boots worn with a regimental looking teeshirt...

from the way I read it, it is a problem if you are wearing full rig and trying to look like the real thing. so you can wear your jackets and trousers but you just can't wear them at the same time you have to mix it with non military clothing.
if you  need hard wearing kit thats fit for shooting  has that tactical look and will not upset the range staff take a look at the 5:11 range.

That's exactly right and well said BTW.

My opinion is, that's the rules and if you don't like it, then f**k off, there's plenty of other places to shoot.

I've also noticed that some of the worst cases are the saddo's who do all their shooting on Short Siberia (with cranky old wooden guns and muzzle loaders) dressed in full camo kit, and even forage caps , and some of the biggest complainers are people who aren't even NRA members

But you also get those saturday and sunday types who think they have a God given right to wear their "uniform" at all times and even turn up with their "rank" on it when they're not even on duty.........

I wear DPM trousers cos they are comfy, practical and cost me a tenner, so when I'm kneeling or prone I'm not bothered about getting them dirty.

I wear a ripstop DPM jacket cos it cost me twenty quid, and its ripstop, which means it I wont rip when going prone from standing. It's good because I don't have to wear my Deerhunder Montana Jacket which cost £140 or my red and grey berghaus which cost £200, neither of which are rip stop.

Function over form, the army use it because it is good stuff. Most shooters on the circuit that I've met wear it for that very reason. Its not about wannabes or airsoft/paintball types playing at army. Give me the same gear in navy blue, grey or any other colour that I'd normally wear and I'd still use it.

I respect the point about the SASC's not knowing who the real army types are though. It's got to be a bit confusing if you are 200m+ away.

I'v ordered my new kit already:

Slightly off topic.

Over here at the ranges we wear everyday jeans 'n' stuff for the shoots. As military kit of any kind is shunned upon by the civdiv.

There have been about 10 occasions in the last 15 years since I left the Army where I have worn my uniform for the German army reserve activity days, if I hadn't I wouldn't have been allowed to participate as uniform was mandatory. One of which was a Military skills competition run by the US Army.

My DPM (home retention kit), is packed up in my HMG's kit bag for a rainy day, or when HMG requests its return.

Camo kit is looked down at by the Hunters over here, which means that there are loads of hard wearing clothes in green to choose from. Real tree stuff has a hard time over here due to the hunting traditions.
