from Vitos 'read-only' post.

This comes up every once in a while. There are no such things as LBRs in the Firearms Act, so don't ask for one.
It is either a rifle or illegal, there are no grey areas, there is no getting around the Law or even [laughs in disbelief] an offence of "not in the spirit of the Law".

Nobody asks (in their right mind) for an AK47 or M16 or AR15, whatever, they ask for .223/5.56RIFLE or 7.62RIFLE. If you ask for 7.62russian then you'll only be allowed a 7.62russian calibre rifle. Ask for 7.62RIFLE (or better still 30cal) and you can choose from a whole host of different cartridge sizes. Same with .22, dont ask for 22LR or 22Mag or 22swift or even 22rf, leave it as 22cal and you have more choice. Unless you really know the cartridge size you want

These statements are designed to inflame, and cause more problems than they solve, just like the panic around the boxes for 'shooters' powder' thread we had a few weeks ago. The British Contingent on Guntrader is the worst for this type of 'selective editing', he'll give half a story, usually the most evocative half, and let it go. He should learn to read and comprehend before he types.

Thanks for that insight Matt, so should I risk it?

On the subject of .22's I was led to believe you had to specify .22 Rimfire or .22 Centrefire, correct?

I was under that impression too...... My first application was sent back for being "none specific" but subsequent variations that have been, shall we say, more vague have been approved.

Think it must differ from force to force?

I find it best to just state the calibre. It saves the grief

With that said, my .260 is down as just a 6.5mm rifle

Do you mean cartridge size?

If you just state calibre (like it says on the form that the Police designed and approved) then you are free to go with that calibre - more choice.

Otherwise state cartridge size if you are sure of what you want.

Case law (forget details but the expert from BASC was an 'expert witness' and he told me the story) Guy in Scotland has 22rifle spare slot. Travels to Cumbria (or up north somewhere, memnory starts to fail at this time on a weekend) and buys a 220swift (or 222, well a 22 centre fire). When he informs local plod they come and seize the rifle and get the dealers force to prosecute said dealer. In court the expert (BASC guy) details what calibre actually means and how a 220 (22lr, 22Mag, 222, 22-250, 223, 5.56 etc) are all 22calibre. Prosecution for the Scottish police force said "we meant rim fire", judge says "you should have stated rim fire. Case dismissed".

I'm paraphrasing a bit, but that's the jist of it.

My Father had/has 30cal on his ticket, bought 308, sold it and now has 30-30. Both 30 cal. You have to know your calibres though, otherwise you can get caught out, for instance a .303 is not a 30 cal, it is a 303 calibre. Our force are very sensible about it, others are not so understanding and can cause trouble.

Had to be Sussex Police!

Has to be said that Sussex police 'aren't very good' about the 'spirit' of the law. My old FEO was great, the nameless/faceless in the HQ aren't so good in my experience. Lots of trouble trying to get a spare upper on my licence - they wanted it listed as spare barrel/spare receiver/spare bolt. I just asked for a whole rifle, and the licence came back with a barrelled action!

So will the much delayed Home Office Firearms Review… WTF are they waiting for? Didn't they get the answers they wanted this time?

may be relevant,
phoned my licensing department last week (Devon and Cornwall) on the question of 7.62x25,39,51,54 etc. Because I had 7.62mm on the ticket then I could get any one, russian, Nato etc. Although they listed different sizes under 7.62 they were 'streamlining' to all come under 1 calibre.

Seems that D&C are becoming more enlightened.
I understand they are pretty good anyway, is that right?

on the whole apart from the odd 'screw ups' now and again
