Yeah seen it. I respect van Uhm for his service as well as the fact that his son gave his life while serving in AFG (although I'm against wasting time there personally).
When the video came out I wanted to find out what the guy thinks about private gun ownership because it could very well be that he believes in a .gov monopoly on gun ownership (not sure of this but that is the usual position). I also missed him publicly coming out in favor of our highest decorated soldier who went through a huge media circus court case (guilty, 80 hours community service + a fine )for the possession of a 'electroshocker' (You need a license that isn't issued to posses one in the home). What van Uhm speech does imply is a break with the past concerning the Dutch military tactic of 'pacifism'. The guys we sent to Yugoslavia were armed just with Uzi's because anything heavier would only provoke violence, result of course was thousands of civilian dead. I'll ask around to see what he thinks of private gun ownership. |

Bosnia was a screwy situation, as the UN troops were kept powerless and couldn't do any real soldiering while they were there.. I have friends who were there at the beginning who are now suffering from PTSD and a serious sense of guilt because all they could do was stand idly by while the ethnic cleansing was done in front of them...
It would be interesting to hear his take on civilian or firearms in the hands of private persons. Tony |
