Can anybody give me the dope on hunting Indian Reservations in NM? I am thinking of planning a trip out. I have no interest in big money trophy hunts. I'd be content with a cow elk tag or non-trophy Mule deer, etc. I hunt a lot in Virginia, and it would be fun to experience some different terrain and maybe some longer shots. Can anyone recommend a guide or a particular locale? At this point I don't even know the questions to ask. Google turns up a lot of low-quality, out of date web sites.
Thank you in advance. |

Have not looked at cow elk tag prices on the reservations in a while, but my recollection is that the reservations allocate their tags through a drawing, which passed a while ago. So I don't think you will get a tag from a tribe at this point. Easiest way to hunt elk this year would be to buy a landowner tag for one of the late season hunts. The tag could be for either private land only or for public land and for private land that has received unit wide tags. Along the same lines, the Vermejo ranch sells late season cow tags on occasion, in an effort to manage their herd.
Not sure how the mule deer private land tags work, but I believe you can also get permission to hunt private land for mule deer. |

This may not be what you are looking for, but almost anything on the reservation will be big money. Check the Albuquerque journal classifieds or Craigslist and you will find left over land owner tags. If you want to hunt this year, it about your only option. If you find a tag that interests you post here before you buy. There are some units that are great and some that are terrible |
