I'm just curious, are any of you shooting this?  I haven't shot very much pistol in many years and have been thinking of giving this a try at the Del Norte Gun Club.  Old age is catching up with me and shooting NRA HP rifle is a real bitch now even though I can still hold my own.

I do, although I missed the shoot this past weekend. You can shoot one match as a guest and don't have to be a member of Del Norte to participate, although it is cheaper. IDPA has a good website where you can become a member and read the rules in PDF format. IDPA matches are held at Del Norte on the third Sunday of the month (except this month...it was moved up due to a scheduling conflict). Also, go to google groups and join the Del Norte Defensive Shooters group. It is the primary means of communication about events and the scores are posted there. If shooting once a month isn't enough, Calibers Shooting Range has a pistol league that meets on the 2nd & 4th Sundays of the month and the shoots are similar to IDPA with a few minor rules changes. There is an intro class to take before you can participate at Calibers in order to go over the rules as well as a safety briefing. I believe this is held on the first Sunday of the month. Their number is 797-9715 and Jordan is the point of contact for the league.

Thanks for the info.  I'm already a member at Del Norte and had planned to check it out there this month; however as you said they changed the date.  I still need to get some extra mags, mag pouches and a holster that meets the rules.  I also emailed Jerry Weesner to add me to his mailing list.  Meanwhile I'll be loading some more ammo and practicing with my new pistol.

For a gentle introduction to "tactical" handgun shooting, you might want to try an Action Pistol match at Zia.

We're largely informal.  You can pretty much shoot whatever you want to bring, as long as you're safe.  Guests are welcome, and we meet on the 2nd, 4th, and 5th (if there is one) Saturday each month.  There is no fee to participate, not even a range fee (unlike the City range).

Our matches could be described as IDPA/IPSC-lite, with quasi-IPSC scoring.  Safety is the main concern.  We do use IPSC-type cardboard targets, but also steel.

The matches are well-organized, so we're usually set up by 0900 and done by noon.

I won't pretend that Zia Action Pistol is in any way a substitute for IDPA, but it is a good way to get a taste of draw, fire, and move shooting.  The atmosphere is very friendly and open to novice shooters.  No one will get upset with you for shooting slowly or missing a lot.

We have a match coming up next weekend, and another the weekend after that.  More info here:

Objekt, this sounds like a lot of fun, how many people show up? Is it the kind of thing where you will be waiting in line for 20-30 mins waiting to shot? Or So few people that it goes by pretty fast?

Turnout varies.  A lot of people wuss out in the winter, so we'll have only 20-30 shooters sometimes.

This spring & summer, we've been absolutely slammed, despite the high temperatures.  We had 50 shooters at the 9 July match, 43 at the match before that, and 45 at the one before that.  We're expecting another high turnout at the next match.

Usually we have only 3 stages.  Due to the continuing high turnout, we're probably going to have a 4th stage at the next match.  That should cut down on wait times.

30-45 min. between turns at shooting is typical.  That sounds like a long time, but it helps if you keep busy by helping reset the stage between shooters.  Also BS'ing with your buddies (I've become an expert at the latter).  The more aggressively the non-shooters tape targets, pick up brass, etc., the sooner everyone gets to shoot.

Hope this helps.

Objekt,
I was a member of Zia for a few years before joining Del Norte and I know they had a locked gate, so what is the proceedure to get into the match?  Arrive early or set up a meeting outside or ?

Ya, this helps. Gives me a good idea of how the event plays out. Thank you.

Yes.  You could also get in touch with a current member who's planning to attend.

If nothing else works, show up at the gate between 0800 and 0830 and tell someone going in that you're there for action pistol.

Once again we had some new shooters, but some of the regulars weren't there.  We still had 47 shooters.  Were done about 1230-ish.

We really need to add a 4th stage.
