I will be out to NM to visit my little bit of heaven next week. I am going to the Cowboy symposium in Ruidoso Downs next week. I have a small cabin in Ruidoso and a little piece of ranch property in the foothills of the Capitans. I can't wait to get back out there and "Check the fences"!!!!!! If any of you guys are in the Ruidoso area, stop by for a cerveza or two!

This is my cabin. It is a work in progress. We are slowly working on replacing all the siding with log siding and installing new windows and insulation. A new metal roof is next on the list:

A "visitor" we had back in June:

This will be the view off of my front porch when I retire and get to build my house out at the ranch:

These are a few of my neighbors "Pets":

You just can't beat the NM sunsets:

Correct me if i'm wrong mic214, but isn't your ranch out in Arabela?  I did some deer hunting up there a couple years ago and honestly have never seen so many deer in my life.

44Punk,

Yes it is.....We do see our share of deer out there. We also get quite a bunch at the cabin too. We are about 1-1/2 miles out of town at the base of Sierra Blanca. The National forest surrounds us there, so we have plenty of deer, bear and elk.....

I can't wait to retire and get out there full time so I can do some hunting!!!!!!

Hope the Symposium has better weather this year.  We were up there last year and it rained for almost 24hrs straight.

Love the cabin, btw.  Have fun!

Mick.  Just seeing those pics has me chompin' at the bit to get back to NM.  Now I know why the rest of the family migrated from to NY to there.  Talk about a little slice of heaven!

I was over in Arabela a month or 2 ago, delivering a new wildland firetruck. I love the views up there. Good luck and have fun.

Bassdeer,

Damn, I am going to have to take a rain-check.....the bride just informed me that we are flying back here on the morning of the 20th. Maybe next time...... I plan to get back out there in May or June for at least three or four weeks.

Good luck on your hunt....

Mick

After Action Report:

I had a great time "Out West"! The Cowboy Symposium was a lot of fun (Even for an "All hat and no cattle, northern yankee!"). The wind picked up a bit during the Chuck Wagon cook out contest and added some "Prairie seasoning" to the food, but it was still outstanding.

I picked up a few of my guns from Sam Damewood's shop and put a few rounds through them when I got out to the ranch:

This is the first handgun I ever owned, a three screw Ruger Single Six. It started out life as a 5-1/2", but then I had it cut to a 4-5/8" by a so-called "Gunsmith". It was a very poor job. I picked up a 9-1/2" barrel for it on eBay and had it installed by Sam:

This is my Ruger Bisley in .44 magnum. It originally had a 4-5/8" barrel, but now sports a 7-1/2" tube. It balances much better for me:

This is my .308 caliber Gibbs Company Model #7 "Jungle Carbine". It is a conversion of an Ishapore Enfield rifle. The front sight was loose in the dovetail. Sam re-set the dovetail and it is now a "Plate ringer" (200 yard steel plates with iron sights)! I call it my "Outback Carbine":

And I also picked up a new hobby when I was out there......making medicine bags! I stopped in at Two Bears Trading Post in Ruidoso and picked up a couple them (The light tan ones) and decided to try my hand a making a few myself......
