I am from Deming.  When are you going to be here?  Jeeps are good, lotta places to explore.  From a shooting standpoint, we have a few ranges, two pretty decent gun shops to take care of that gunless problem.

I shoot USPSA matches in Las Cruces once a month.

Let me know when you get here, I can give you a few ideas on what to do and where to go.

As far as CCW laws, New Mexico has a CCW and we recognize quite a few CCW's from other states.  Open carry is legal in New Mexico as long as you dont go to the schools.

Man, do more research on NM carry laws - you're not getting the whole picture so far in this thread (and I don't have time to post the whole picture - sorry). For one thing: You carry (open or concealed) ANYWHERE where they sell liquor, and you're a felon.

The laws (like any laws) are complex: do some research on the NM Dept of Public Safety website and look at the laws themselves before you come.

Erich, roger that.  In my eyes its never smart to carry in a bar anyway, even if you had a justified reason to use it, youd be up a creek anyway for using bad judgement.  I was just wondering what the laws were out there, prolly not bringin my pistol anyway.. cuz I have to cross 10 - 15 state lines..... and Im trouble prone anyway.  Thanks for lookin out though.

Anywhere liquor is sold is off limits. Schools, universities, etc. are off limits. Check packing.org for a comprehensive list.

What state lines do you have to cross? Under Federal law, if you aren't stopping, and have your guns locked up in a prescribed manner, the locals have to give you safe passage.

From Packing.org:

Places off-limits while carrying
Date updated: Sep 14, 2005 @ 7:14 pm

Unlawful carrying of a deadly weapon on school or pre-school premises.
Unlawful carrying of a deadly weapon on university premises
Unlawful carrying of a deadly weapon in licensed liquor establishments****
Courts (without the consent of the presiding judge)
Tribal Land (unless authorized by the tribal council)
On a snowmobile (unless there is no round in the chamber)
Airport security zones
State parks
Many federal properties - military bases, national parks, national monuments, etc.
While under the influence of alcohol or drugs
Unlawful carrying of a deadly weapon on a bus
****Includes convenience stores selling alcohol for off premises consumption.

There still seems to be some confusion regarding our alcohol laws. Here's the complete text you need to understand. The word "dispense" in NM does not differentiate between on-premise or off-premise consumption.

" 30-7-3. Unlawful carrying of a firearm in licensed liquor establishments.
A. Unlawful carrying of a firearm in an establishment licensed to dispense alcoholic beverages consists of carrying a loaded or unloaded firearm on any premises licensed by the regulation and licensing department for the dispensing of alcoholic beverages except:
(1) by a law enforcement officer in the lawful discharge of his duties;
(2) by the owner, lessee, tenant or operator of the licensed premises or his agents, including privately employed security personnel during the performance of their duties;
(3) by a person in that area of the licensed premises usually and primarily rented on a daily or short-term basis for sleeping or residential occupancy, including hotel or motel rooms;
(4) by a person on that area of a licensed premises primarily utilized for vehicular traffic or parking; or
(5) for the purpose of temporary display, provided that the firearm is:
(a) made completely inoperative before it is carried onto the licensed premises and remains inoperative while it is on the licensed premises; and
(b) under the control of the licensee or an agent of the licensee while the firearm is on the licensed premises.
B. Whoever commits unlawful carrying of a firearm in an establishment licensed to dispense alcoholic beverages is guilty of a fourth degree felony".
