Neither PD spent a dime acquiring those vehicles.  They're on loan from the Army provided that the agencies keep up with all maintenance and relinquish "the keys" on demand.  Army gets free storage and upkeep, your local PD gets a giant fucking money pit.

Yep!  It seems like a good deal at first.  Thinking hell yeah! Then you have to put new tires on them! Or worse you have you replace a seal or someone and have to pull all that damn armor plating off just get to damn thing never mind having to actually pull the seal on a one of a kind SUV that no local guy around these parts has worked on.

It can add up real quick.

They seem to lean, very quickly, that these things cost far too much to operate for them to actually USE.

They pay a lot for them. Oversized loads ain't cheap.  Benton paid 3 or 4k total before paint and decals.

Have any of you guys been to the Federal Surplus in NLR?  that is prime example of gov waste!  The only good thing about it is if you a approved agency you can buy for pennies on the dollar there.

The Police is an agency, and it has a duty to consider the costs to the taxpayer.  I get the excitement, but these things are nonsense and have no business in that role.

Vehicle can be used for DARE and other programs. Maybe enough kids will be impressed by it that one or two who wouldn't otherwise care about any of the safety programs will listen, it might save one visit to the ICU, which might save several million $$ in tax-payer money, which would pay for the damn thing ten times over probably.

I'm just trying to be positive...
