So that's an expose on a place that really sucks to live.

I wonder what a map of section 8 housing would look like compared with various statistics.

Stereotypes exist for a reason, in case you were wondering.

I've was born and raised in Pine Bluff.  I'm now raising my family in Pine Bluff.  I've never had anything broken into, stolen, vandalized, etc.  Neither has my parents, my grandparents, my siblings, etc.  There's not a part of town I avoid because of fear from being mugged, shot, etc.  As the Chief accurately stated, the crime and violence occurs between the drug addicts and other criminals.  Your average citizen has absolutely little to no chance of having an issue.

That doesn't mean that I won't have my shirt tucked INSIDE my sidearm while making a delivery to Crime Bluff in the dead of night -- or broad-fucking-daylight.

How is Chicago not on that list?  48 murders in January 2012 alone. In one of the most tightly regulated gun citys in america?  Seems like that study may be a little off

Local LEO's in Pine Bluff use a euphemism to be politically correct: "democrats".  As in "these 2 democrats knocked over a liquor store."

I have many relatives that still live in PB.   I remember going there all the time when I was a kid.

PB used to be the "place to go" to shop, eat, or see a real doctor.  The downtown area was busy
and the mall was always packed full of shoppers.

Last time I went in that mall it was practically empty.  Downtown looks like a ghost town.  it's just
not the same town it used to be.  It looks tired.

I helped wire som Jim Walters homes in PB in the mid 90's. Never saw any crimes, but saw that there really are tar-paper shacks. A shit-hole.

Based on the graph in the link, West Memphis is doing it's share to keep this area at #4.  I get the daily crime updates from Olive Branch, MS and most of those are shoplifting at Wal-Mart.  I'm surprised that here in Southaven (same population as Pine Bluff), we have an even lower crime rate than OB.

Chicago Police in the 1990's used the term "French Canadians"

It is coming.  I can promise you that.  We own a house in Southaven and I worry about property values eventually dipping more than they already have.  Memphis is slowly spilling over.  Horn Lake is going down the tubes pretty quick.  I know the Walmart in Southaven is slowly turning into the ghetto shopping center.  People in Memphis go there because sales tax is cheaper.

I enjoy the choice of eating establishments, but I cringe every time we go back there.  Goodman Road is a stinking nightmare.  I do not miss my 45 minute, 7.5 mile, commute to work from Southaven to Memphis each day.  I'll take the lower cost of living and the 18 minute, 15 mile, commute with no red lights from the farm to Pine Bluff for work any time.

I know it is coming but the local police have it under control for NOW.  I'd say that 99% of the theft crimes in the Olive Branch police reports are committed by Memphians so I assume the same is here.

I agree about Goodman Road.  I avoid it like the plague by taking Church Road since I live closer to it.

My wife and I toyed with the idea of moving back to southeast AR but changed our mind after spending the Christmas holiday around family.  They are crazy but we could probably get past that.  On a weekend afternoon, the nearest place to buy a Diet Coke was Lake Village (20 miles away).  Luckily the only working Coke machine in town took a credit card.  We are spoiled by the convenience of everything around us.  I'm 3/4 mile from the drug store.  I'm 1 mile from our veterinarian.  I'm 2 miles from a 24 hour Kroger.  In those 2 miles, there are 9 restaurants on Getwell Road alone.

Come on now....you know SEARK is a growing metro.....

OK, I can't even say that with a straight face.

The delta is dieing a slow death.  Dermott has gone from 5,500 people when I graduated high school to 3,200 in the 2000 census.  I don't think the town has the money to update the sign with the latest numbers.  Monticello looked nice when we visited a few years ago.  I was surprised that both of the houses I rented were still standing.  I guess they stopped renting to college students.

Yes, it is mostly all Memphians committing the crimes.  The problem in Horn Lake is they've not only committed the crimes there but decided to move there as well.  It was the original subdivision area.  Southaven boomed next and then Olive Branch.  Hernando is still a nice area, but it is starting to really boom, too.

Where Walmart and the shopping center behind it is in Southaven was where my wife and her friends used to ride four wheelers in high school.  Her parents still remember Goodman Road when it was gravel and the only thing on it off the interstate was a feed store.

My wife still misses the luxury of all the shopping.  She hates being 20 miles from the closest Walmart, 60+ miles from Target (I can't stand the French), and 10 miles from the closest gas station.  I only lived over there a little over 4 months while she finished up grad school, but when my work offered me a 60% raise to move back to Pine Bluff I packed up the moving truck and came back to the Delta as fast as I could.  I loved the eating joints, but the traffic, cookie cutter houses, and no where to hunt, fish, or trap within 30 miles made me want to walk down Goodman Road with a blindfold on.  I now deer hunt and trap within a 5 minute walk from my backdoor.  The closest fishing hole is our 2 acre pond that is a good 30 seconds walk from the backdoor.  If it gets old we have 2 more and a creek 7/10 of a mile down the road.

My wife's cousin was a police officer here when Goodman was still gravel in Horn Lake so I've heard the stories. He's now in Hernando along with a bunch of other refugees from West Helena.   I'm on the Shvn/OB line in an area that economically does not favor riff-raff moving in.  In fact, I may be the riff-raff of this 'hood.

My sister-in-law and her family live in White Hall so I know the PB area very well.  Her husband shares a little hunting area near by with a local baker (Google PB bakeries and it's the first one that has a family name in it).  I'm not much of a hunter but I do like shooting out there.
