| Moving to the 'Natural State'. Would like hunters opinion on 5.56 vs. Black/Brown Bear ,Mule/whitetail Deer and Boar Hogs. |
|
I can give you the rundown on my area (NWA). Not many bear in NWA, surely no brownies. No mulies either. Never seen a wild hog but supposedly they are on a few private plots, although as another poster mentioned, they are more of a central/southern thing. It is, however, absolutely CRAWLING with whitetail up here. The areas around I540 from missouri down to fort smith and beyond are just ridiculous. It is dangerous to drive at any speed on some of the forest roads around here simply because the roads WILL have deer milling around on them, especially in the evening. |
| Well, you're not going to see any mule deer or brown bear. Most of the hogs are in the southern part of the state. Same with the bear, they are central to southern. I've never seen one. Of all the deer I've killed I don't think a single one has been more than 30-40 yards. By the way, welcome. |
| .223 is legal for hunting deer or bear in arkansas. Though if you kill a brown bear the zoo keepers will probably be quite angry with you. As for whether or not it's adequate for bear i have no idea most people i know who hunt them use a bow. As for deer and hogs why not? Hogzilla was killed with a .223. And as someone else stated you won't find mule deer in Arkansas but if you're VERY VERY VERY lucky you might draw an elk tag!! some years there are up to a dozen of them! |

Black bear - I wouldn't recommend it. You could probably kill one with a .223 but I wouldn't take one bear hunting. Use a high power rifle (30-06, 7mm, etc) or a 12 gauge with slugs. Whitetail deer - I've killed several with my AR's. All were one shot kills ranging from 10 - 50 yards. I recommend the 64gr Winchester power point, but I did kill a 7 point last year with a 45gr hollow point. Hogs - Sure, no worries |
