I had the chance to visit the Cheney range this last Friday with my brother. We've been there in the past and are familiar with the range rules. Our first contact with the range nazi went like this.....
I'm filling out the permits. RN: Whatcha shootin? My brother: Rifles. RN: What kind? My brother: .223 and AK. Right there, I could see that the RN had a problem right off the bat. He assumes that we must be in some kind of gang, and proceeds to tell us that there's a one shot-4 second rule and that if he catches us shooting more than that, he'll kick us out and write us a ticket to boot. I look to my brother and we come to the same conclusion......what an asshole. RN gets in his pickup and drives off. We just buried a fellow LEO brother earlier and thought that the range might help reduce some stress. By that, I mean shooting, not blasting. .223 ammo is expensive these days. We go and resight in our rifles at the 25 yard pistol range. We are properly attired. Later, the RN drives back.......2 hours later. My brother has donned his plate carrier and was shooting rifle and transitioning to pistol. All under the 4 second rule. RN comes up sees his badge on his leg holster, says he's a "cop" too and that this (cheney) is a target range not a combat range. Can't shoot off the table and can't wear the plate carrier. I'm thinking...you're a cop from where? There was another gentleman who was shooting his SAA revolvers and was told to slow down. He also thought the RN was an ass. By this time, I was done with this range. We pick up our brass, & target backers. Just like we were never there. We had never had a problem with the other range masters before. WTF? The RN is w/m, 50s, 600/200, mustache. Anyone know his name? Called the office, just got a recording. Anyone else with same experience? ETA: Called again, spoke to his supervisor at length and RN will be "reined in". Super apologized and said that there was no excuse given for the lack of professional courtesy. |
| I also had a run in with this douchebag.I took my son to get some range time about a month ago since he will be deer hunting this year with me and I also took my rifle and my AR.As I was filling out the "permit" he came up and asked what I was shooting so I said our deer rifles and a .223.He said that was OK (didn't know I needed permission)and went back to his truck.I unloaded our guns and stuff, the range officer followed us to the rifle range, stood by the bathroom, and stared at me and my 14 year old son.We were the only ones on the 100 yard range)I set up our targets,we shot my 7 mag and my son shot a box through my 30-30.Once I pulled out the AR and fired ONE round I heard somebody yelling.I look through the spotting scope, shoulder the AR, fire 1 more round ,look through the spotting scope when I get tapped on the shoulder by the range nazi.He proceded to tell me that I was firing too fast and that if we don't get off his range I will be ticketed and I won't be allowed back.Since my son was with me I said "fine we are leaving and I am going to call Pratt over this"and we left.I'm still pissed.I took my son out of school early as a reward for good grades, took some sick leave, and had a good day ruined by a jackass with a God complex. I called the ofice in pratt and got a ok we will look into it......bastards |

last year there seemed to be a lot less people. The range officers did not really care what you were doing.
There was no 4 second rule. I was shooting out there last weekend and right when I got there the same guy was arguing with someone about shooting too fast. The RO finally said "I don't like your attitude" and told the guy to leave. Didn't catch the whole story but it seemed slightly excessive. That range is turning into a complete mess. In August I was shooting from the prone position on the 100 yard range. I was the only one there at the time and shooting at a steady pace. Some guy just got there several rows over and starts walking down to put up his target without saying a word . I saw him after my last shot and
he was about 25 yards downrange. |

Just plain courtesy. Most people yell something like "check targets?, cease fire, go downrange?, are we clear?, etc.". This guy walked by me so he knew I was there. I did not see him come to the firing line so he needed to say something to announce his presence because at the time I started that string of shots I was alone. It was a 20 round mag that mag lasted about 2 minutes which in my opinion is not that long of a wait. |

I happen to know of a police officer living around Cheney that fits this description of a God complex. Don't know his name, I'm pretty certain he's a State Trooper. Makes me think twice about taking the AR out to the Cheney range and I'm only about 6-7 miles away. Last time I was there the woman RO was there, super friendly. A couple of people had AK's, there was an SKS there, and me with the AR. We all had some fairly rapid fire going, probably a round every 2-3 seconds, she seemed fine with it. Nate |

My how things have changed . I used to go over there most every Sat. morning . The RO would unlock the gate , as I was usually there before him , and then unlock the targets and sit in the pick up. Never getting out for any reason . I felt like I was always on my own range.
Never hear of any 3 or 4 second rule there...........?????????? Must be since I have been ...................... I shot many different weapons and as fast as I wanted . Most of the RO's then were LEO from Hutch police or Reno Co. sheriff IIRC, don't remember any women . |
. I saw him after my last shot and
