We went to Indiana for Turkey Day and have now been stuck in Russell Kansas (I-70 is closed from Russell Kansas to Aurora, Colorado because of snow/blowing snow) since 11 p.m. last night (it's now 10:30 a.m.). Looks like we'll be here for a while. The closest answer to when they'll have I-70 open is somewhere from 6 p.m. tonight to 6 p.m. tomorrow night. We have our three little ones (8 & 9) with us and spent last night in the car. I guess it looks like at least one more night in the car!!! From what we've heard, a man died last night on the highway about 1/4 mile from where we were at.

We are having a hard time getting any accurate information on the weather or when they are expecting to get the road opened. If there is anyone in the area that either has better info or a suggestion on an alternate route that we might be able to take, we would appreciate hearing from you. We're sitting in the Russell Library right now typing this, so I'm not sure how long we'll be able to check the board.

Hey, does anyone happen to live in Russell Kansas?????? We have beer

My dad just called from McCook, Nebr. saying they are having 40 mph winds and 6"-8" of snow with 4' to 6' snow drifts. With more on the way. Meanwhile here on the western slope of Colo. I'm enjoying a sunny,25° day with mild winds. Like you, I think you're going to be stuck for another day. I don't think there's going to be a safe, alternate route unless you want to go south to New Mexico and up. But dad said Denver was getting hit pretty good too.

Good luck brother. I'll send in a prayer for you and yours.

ETA: Raido just said CDOT is helping cars, and cars only, to get from Burlington to Seibert westbound. So limited westbound is now happening in Colo. I-76 from Denver to Big Springs, NE is open, but I-80 in NE is closed. Sure sounds like you're stuck. See if the community has opened up a shelter somewhere. Better than another cold night in the car, especially with the kids involved.

We made it...
Decided to stay put for a second night. Topped off the tank, snugged in behind a truck close to the on-ramp, got the kids fed and bedded down and just rode-er-out. It was cold but we didn't need to run the engine all night. We just woke up and let it run for a few minutes at a time to warm everyone up a bit then shut it down again. We decided to conserve fuel since we had no idea when we would get out or when/if the stations would run out of gas. They opened the highway at 6:15 this morning. We were the third vehicle down the ramp. Looks like there was another fatality a few miles down the highway. Looked like they spun out, flipped and rolled accross all four lanes.
Bunch of folks out there in too big of a hurry ending up in the ditch or in the median.
It was 50-55 mph right up to the Colorado border then the road cleared up nicely.
Thanks to everyone for all the links and advice. We got an offer of a place to hole up for the night as well. I gotta tell ya it warms my heart to see someone open up his home like that. Just goes to show you that wacked out gun carrying Survivalist freaks are some of the best damn people in the world and I'm proud to be one of you.

Thanks for the update Broadsword. Glad everything turned out well enough.

I agree with you. Good people are everywhere. And the 'net helps bring them together.
