Good afternoon Folks,

Need a little help as I am planning to bring the Mrs and daughter to visit Alaska in June. We live in Florida. The only must do on the itinerary is whale watching and De Ali.Can you guys please give me your wisdom and what to bring? I'm thinking about bringing my gen 3 glock 21. I read the carry thread and I'm also a LEO so I don't want to head up with nothing unless I have to. Thanks.

Do you intend to do a lot of hiking? If so it may be prudent to invest in a reliable 10mm conversion for the Glock for bear protection.

If he is carrying under the law enforcement safety act it has to be a gun he has qualified with.

Yes. We intend to hike quite a bit. I've qualified with the gun but I don't have the 10mm conversion kit.

I know you are still formulating plans but if you get down to Kodiak to do some whale watching/bear viewing /fishing etc.  I would be happy to give you any info that would be helpful or give you some reputable hook ups for activities.  As a former Floridian (30 yrs in Tallahassee)  I would be happy to show you around a bit if it works out.

Feel free to IM me if you like.

If he is here as a tourist does it matter what he carries? Heck OP, your welcome to use my G 20 if you want.... Not sure if because being LE puts you under special rules?

If he wants to carry as a cop protected by his departments liability insurance he needs to carry what he is qualified on.

You're fine with a .40. It's a few weeks touring the state, not a career of guiding in the backcountry.

Would any department's insurance cover an officer in a out-of-jurisdiction vacation situation? I'll never be in that situation, but if I was an LEO I wouldn't expect to be covered by my department.
