Stopped in over my lunch break today.  Holy cow their prices are high!   50% more than MidwayUSA or Brownells even after shipping.  I can't see how they stay in business.

I wonder the same thing, they need to put "or best offer" stickers on everything in there.

Pretty much, I never understand why people like to pay more for the same thing.

I think the $12.75 is for the windowed. For some reason, I remember the non-windowed ones being $9.XX at some point.

That's pretty cheap for a windowed Pmag. I don't even see them that cheap online. $16 + free shipping at 44mag.

This was last year or maybe the year before...non window for 12.75.  Out of curiosity, I might have to swing by tomorrow and check...I need some stuff from that side of post anyways.

PX PMAG Prices:

Non-Window:  12.75
Windowed:  15.50

20 round 308:  20.50

...in addition, I walked into the commisary and was promptly reminded why I do most of my shopping off post.  A zoo in there.

While we're on the subject of gun shops; anyone have any leads where I can pick up a holster for a Ruger .44 Alaskan? I looked at Sportsman's and the BX but came up empty handed. Id like to buy local before resorting to ordering from Ruger.

I did an abbreviated gun/pawn shop circuit today looking for S&W revolvers and .357 lever guns.  Nothing to be found, but the Cash America nearest REI had some .38 Smiths.  I almost bought a nice pre-safety model 94 in .44 mag from the gun shop right next to it, but I really wanted a .357.  The only reason I would buy the .44 is if it was a pre-64 and then to trade for a similar .357.

Depends on what type of holster.  Northern Security always has a bunch of holsters, but as I was browsing for a Shield holster, I noticed the selection had gone down.  They did get restocked on Federal HST.

I swear there was a gun shop somewhere that had a bunch of holsters, but I forgot who.  You could order online, I'm sure Amazon, Midway, or Brownells has something.  Isn't there a holster maker somewhere in the bowl?  I think in one of those towns between ER and Palmer, ran into him at a gun show and he had some nice leather holsters.  Diamond lether, double d leather or something similar.

This one and other "PREMIUM" gun shops in Anchorage have been ripping people off for years....

Look at Northern Security & Great Northern Guns, just to name a few others....

But as long as the idiots keep paying their over-inflated prices, why should that change???

As long as you are not looking for something fancy, Walmart sells an Uncle Mike's cordura holster with a flap closure that fits the Redhawk Alaskan and 4" Redhawk nicely.  I use one for my hiking rig and it works real nice on the hip belt of my backpack.

For the leverguns, best to stick with an action designed for the pistol cartridges for the best reliability, if you can. The 94s, designed for rifle-length cartridges, tend to suffer a bit in reliability when chambered in .44 Mag or .357. I would go with a Winchester 92 - the Rossi 92s are good for the money - and it (with the 86) is basically the strongest lever action design, so they handle hot loads. If you prefer Marlins, then the Marlin 1894 is the way to go. In the Winchester 94, I stick with rifle cartridges. I want to build one in 7-30 Waters, but finding an original barrel is the issue now, probably have to pay the extra money to start with a blank.

We have a bunch of holsters (it is our specialty), but not for the Ruger Alaskan. I have also been recommending Diamond D, especially for the larger revolvers - they seem to do very nice work - I have looked at their holsters, and they have some very practical designs.

I have the Ruger Alaskan in .454. I went through several holsters before I found the Diamond D one. They are pricey but well made and they work great for this one.

Have heard that regarding 92s and 94s.  I'm not super knowledgeable on lever guns, they intrigue me though.    It just caught my eye.  So much so that I had to drive back and check it out again.

What is the price like? Give me a shout and I can give you some tips on finding a good price on a 92. The 94s were not built in pistol calibers pre-64 that I know of, and while the 94s built right after 64 had some atrocious changes, Winchester fixed a lot of their transgressions soon after and from that point on the 94s were actually very nice rifles, and stronger in the receiver than pre-64s, until they totally lost their minds and introduced the abomination called a cross-bolt safety. Now they improved the safety slightly with the tang safety, but it is still all wrong and I have a pre-rebounding hammer/tang 1886 safety hammer and trigger sitting on my desk to be installed in my 1886 Winchester today, and I am about to rip all the safety parts out of my 1895 and modify the hammer, possibly the sear, and the strut to the originally intended half-cock safety configuration.

Really not even very pricy  - they are actually much less expensive than other custom-made holsters of the same types. Well worth the money.

I didn't mean to imply they were over priced, I think they are well worth the money. I know most people are probably used to spending more but $150 was an expensive holster purchase for me.

Well, you're right, $150 is a good chunk of money, (I would have to do a lot of thinking before I spend that much - make sure it is something I will use for a long time) so they are not cheap, but definitely not too bad for what it is, comparatively. They probably aren't getting rich selling them at those prices.

Northern Security is not a bad outfit to deal with and they have ammo that you can't get anywhere else. (Federal HST for example)  If you don't like the prices you can 1. negotiate, 2. not buy it there. People should not be insulted at high prices just vote with your dollar. Alaska Tactical does have high prices but he does provide people with good training. Training is something that most shooters up here are sorely in need of.
