| So... I was in haz-mat training this week with the AACA (Alaska Air Carriers Assoc.) and the instructer told us that ORM-D will go away for good on Jan 1, 2013... This means that instead of consumer commodity ORM-D... Ammo will go back to its basic form of Haz-mat.. what that means for us..... Less quantities allowed and more costly |

I've been seriously hating it as well. I've been working a powder deal for 5 months now and it's driving me freaking nuts! If it was possible to legally drive it through Canada I would have just driven to the L48 and picked it up in person......
How does the ORM-D change impact pallot quantities of blammo as far as trucking/barge shipping to AK? |

I believe the limit on the amount of powder per container is 100lbs (I haven't made a bulk order in a while). Is this how ammo is going to be looked at too, surely not? I've learned more about shipping powder than I ever wanted to. 100lbs total in 8lb containers (with other rules too) is the limit for it to be a 'flammable solid' and not an 'explosive'. The magic key I haven't figured out is how to take a 100lb container and repack it (legally) into 8lb 'flammable solid' containers for shipment. I'm not sure if an approved/licensed person has to do this or if I can do it myself, label the cartons properly, and then ship. It's a hell of a lot easier to find people that say 'no' instead of working toward 'yes'. I'm surprised how little the shipping and hazmat specialty packing companies that I'm trying to work with know about this. After one read through the CFR I know more about it than the shipping people I'm trying to work with. |
