| So I have moved around a lot in my life, but never have I lived somewhere without a decent indoor range. Florida, Texas, Louisiana, and Arizona all had a few to choose from but none in Anchorage (unless I missed one and that wouldn't be the first time). I am still a little surprised that there isn't one here given the climate. Seems like there would be a waiting list at the door if it were done right? Has there ever been an indoor range in Anchorage? |

There used to be one many years ago (with rentals), but its been a long time
Fairbanks has one, but its owned and run by fish and game TVSA has one, but at the present its airgun only because of the air filtration system (they need one) I think the biggest problems deal with the expense of air filtartion and lead exposure and then you have the nightmare of liability to contend with |

It's amazing that old Anchorage doesn't have an indoor range anymore. As UAF pointed out we used to have one but they folded up after a couple years. As I recall they had environmental problems. The building is now a used car dealership.
The only one I know of in southcentral is on the Glenn Hwy outside of Palmer and is called the Mat Valley Sportsman's Range. Linky |
| I looked into it - I was told that the Anchorage assembly decided a while back that there would never be another indoor range in Anchorage. The requirements they have made for air filtration and bonding make it impossible to afford to build or run one. Anchorage is that way about a lot of things - using explosives in the municipality requires $5 million in insurance above the federally mandated insurance. Oh, and APD showed up and shut me down once for working on Easter, which is not allowed in Anchorage. |

If you are expanding to include the valley, there are currently 3 ranges, a 4th is in development. The state run Rabbit creek range is immediately south of Anchorage. It is crap, run by a bunch of overzealous state employees who exercise control over patrons any chance they get. A little north of Anchorage, you have Birchwood Shooting Park, which is a private shooting area, with day memberships available. Pricing on the day membership recently went up, so the year membership is more economical. In the valley you have the Mat-su indoor range towards Palmer on the Glen highway. It is decent as indoor ranges go. Relatively low cost. They have IPSC and IDPA matches. The 4th should be completing the permitting and development hurdles pretty quick. IIRC it is out KGB. |

I did remember it wrong. The range will be next the the Menard center. I have been tracking this somewhat through the AMGA. http://www.adn.com/2010/05/12/1275435/shooting-range-at-wasilla-sports.html |

Awesome, I will have to check that out. Had a great indoor range in Baton Rouge that had weekly competitions(mostly informal). I would really enjoy getting into more competitions here. |

Here's an old thread from another forum I spend time on with some info on competition shooting.
