Do you need to provide your own target stands there?

I have a "new to me" FAL and Security Six to test fire, and the range on Fort Rich is booked until Friday.

Thanks

During open range hours they have bases and target frames available for use.  During member only hours (Mon/Tues and before/after open shooting hours) they have bases available but not target frames.

BRSP Hours

I hope this helps,

Thanks.

Went up there for the first time today and it was mobbed.  I sat in my truck for about 15 minutes watching to see if it was worth fighting the crowd.

On half the lanes there were folks halfway downrange shooting or instructing.  There were a bunch of dudes that took another whole lane playing with AR variants and cool guy gear.  One the 2 ranges on the left, there was a little bit of open space, but safety issues were numerous.  loaded rifles pointing this way and that way, and people fondling weapons while other people were down range.  A group of cops had one range, which probably added to the crowding on the other ranges, but I certainly have no issues with them there––happy to see them shooting.

Overall, the whole range looked like bad news, so I went down to Rabbit Creek for the first time.  While a shorter range for rifle, and I did not like the range master guy controlling the rifle side, it wasn't bad.  Not crowded at all.  Despite its closeness to the city, I have a feeling it caters towards the more mature shooters, but nobody really gave me a second glance when I did a couple mag dumps with my FAL or my M&Ps.  What I can't believe is the amount of cartridge cases laying around.  NOBODY picks up steel or alluminum cases, shotgun hulls were everywhere, and I'm sure reloaders have wet dreams about stopping by there to scavenge brass.

So, I'm sure Birchwood is great if you have a membership and go on members only days, but it looks like bad news/a waste of time to go on open range days.

Thanks again.

Either the things have changed a rabbit creek or you got lucky, I quit going when they started the "no magazines loaded with over 10 rounds" thing.

I try to stay away from there during regular shooting hours. It has been packed the last few weeks and i just don't feel like messing with it. After hours it nice and quite, 90% of the time i have my own range and can just take my time and have fun. Unless those damn machine gunners are there and just blasting stuff. Thats fun too. It's nice to time it right to get the both kinds of shooting in the same trip.

I probably escaped notice because I only have 1 magazine.  Just picked up the gun yesterday, so I'm having to order extra accessories.

Unfortunately, the first few weekends with nice weather are always packed and full of "casual" shooters.  Didn't help that it sounds like there were a few classes/training going on. Need to get out there before 10am on the weekends to avoid the crowds.

Also doesn't help that the guy in the cabin won't get off his butt and police the line, not even a little.  I have no qualms about asking people not to handle firearms while people are down range or asking some guy to make sure his girlfriend stops pointing her gun at me between shots. Most people understand and I'd rather piss someone off than get shot in the back.  That being said, I've found it to be very safe 99% of the time.

Brichwood is a great club.  I shoot on both ends quite frequently (I don't know is 2-3 times a week frequent?) and really enjoy it.  Definitely get the EMP membership.  The rifle range will sell stands to EPM's for $5 if they've got any available for sale.  That way you have one when you need it.  Mine lives in the back of my truck.

Birchwood is awesome , I like that no one is pacing up and down the line looking looking for range violations, "fast fire", hat on backwards, etc.  That being said,
I have no problem telling some one else if they are being unsafe. And vise versa, I have no problem with joe blow telling me if I'm doing something stupid.

This is my first season with a membership there.  I recommend nobody
else get one so I can continue to get a range to myself.

How does this "after hours" thing work?  Is it some sort of old boys club that you have to know the secret handshake to?

I hate shooting when its crowded

Regular shooting is 10-6 Wed-Sun. EPM Membership can shoot from 7AM-10PM 7 days a week

It's after Regular hours of operation. Mon and tues are great. only EPM guys

The only inside info is you have to let the guy in the Black Durango with the BFL on the back shoot your cool toys. He returns the favor i hear.

ETA: It's by far one of the best things i can see doing with $175 related to the shooting sport. If i go 18 times it pays for itself. When it gets warm out and i get out of classes my membership pays for itself in a month.

I'm not understanding the language on the website very well it seems.

Does the EPM fee cover all shooting fees or is there extra?  If not, how do you pay after hours?

Right now you pay $10 per trip. If you buy the membership for $175 there is no more $10 per trip. It covers you for a year. They mail you a key card that gives you access to the front gate to get in after hours. Say you want to start shooting at 6:30pm

So normally come 6pm, the guy in the shack (cant remember his name) gets everybody to leave. Buy your a member so you get to stay while everybody packs up to go home. Then you shoot in peace and well, not really quite but you get the idea.

For anyone that goes to the range often, that's more than worth the annual fees.

I used to go to Rabbit Creek and it was somewhere around 80-90 and couldn't see spending $175 for Birchwood and having to drive all the way out there. After the shit at rabbit creek and dealing with that RSO i went to Birchwood 2-3 times and ended up buying a membership. Have had that for i think 3 years now and it's worth every penny. Just re-upped it a week or 2 ago so i need to go out and start getting my moneys worth.

I find i go even more that i have the EPM because it doesn't cost me $10 each time.

Oh, I'm certainly not a huge fan of Rabbit Creek, just saying it was a decent alternative for me.  Now that I hear, they have magazine restrictions, I probably won't go unless I want to shoot handgun only.  Birchwood is a whole lot easier to drive to for me, and I do not like random dudes on microphones telling me what to do on a range which could easily be run by the people actually shooting.

Even with some of the hassle, I prefer the range on fort Rich––no supervision.  Although, if I had half a clue what my future schedule looked like, I'd be all over than EPM membership and the member only hours.

Wow, I will definately be signing up for that EPM membership, thanks for the info
