Call Young Guns and ask for Race. They can give you his phone number, I lost it already. He does it from his house and then meets you at the range the next day.

It is the NRA course. Hopefully he can take you on a weekday. Around $80 if I remember correctly.

Good Luck.

Race can't do it on the weekday well not the shooting part anyway. He charges $125. Tony at the range can do it on the weekday but you gotta go there early around 8 or so and it's $125 aswell

$125!!! Damn!  The one they offer on Maui is a deal for $45.  First day, about 3 hours, they have a lawyer come in and he goes through as much of the Hawaii gun laws as possible within the given time as well as what your rights are in using a fiream in HD.  You can also ask him questions, i.e. free legal advice.  Next session is a full day at the range where half is spent in class going over various handguns differences and functions, semi, revolver, single vs double action.  Proper grip and breathing, safety, cleaning, etc.  Then you get live fire range time with 22 pistols in revolver, semi, single, and double action.  Finally all the instructors bring in their personal guns and you get to fire any one you want.  That was the cool part as some of them had some sweet pistols.  BTW they supply all the ammo :-).  First day of class is usually on a Thursday which starts at 5:30 then on following Saturday, all day, at Ukumehamehame Range.

I don't know how much ammunition one can pull off for $45 dollars in Hawaii, let alone paying for the instructors (and a lawyer?) and any range fees.

Notice you said .22s.

At Waikiki Gun Shop you start with a .22 revolver, go to .22 semi in Ruger Mark II, followed by 38 revolver, followed by 9mm semi (Glock or Beretta), followed by .45.  It's a nice little rotation that gives people the opportunity to experience a wide range of calibers... unless you've already been there done that, and have moved into this state...

*cough*  stupid laws.

Anyway, WGS runs a solid course which is offered every so often (once a month?  twice a month?).  It only requires a day of your time.

Oh and just keep this in mind;  nothing in this state can be remotely defined as quick, rapid, or expedient when it comes to your handgun purchase.  Bottom line, from the day you have your permit, figure on at least another 3-4 weeks without a handgun in your possession.

Thing about Maui's class is it's inexpensive compared to Oahu, but it's only offered once every other month and it's a two day class. I believe in Oahu with the various instructors, classes are available every other week. I believe most are only one day classes also.

You can get your handgun the very day you get your permit to acquire.

You will need to wait two weeks to be issued a permit to acquire a handgun once you have gotten an affidavit/certificate showing you passed some sort of authorized firearms class/training.

Once you have you that certificate saying you passed the class, you can get your chosen handgun from your chosen dealer in exactly two weeks (assuming you meet the requirements to own a firearm).

Well I believe that's the way it is on Oahu.

Yeah, I mispoke.  I meant to say figure on waiting at least another 3-4 weeks after completing the course.  I had to wait a week for the affidavit to appear then the two week waiting period.

from what I was reading, I guess I am not going to be able to get one.. I really dont get why you can go get a rifle right away but with a handgun you have to take a class.. I dont have the time, Im a working man.. yet the bad guys can go and get one off the street in the same day... I dont have time to do all this stuff and with my job, I work nights, mids and open once in a while.. so I never know what I will be doing the next week.. they need to fix this crap so people that fallow the law, pay taxes and have real jobs can get a gun without doing 5 different things.. I guess I will just be sticking to AR's right now..  It was hard enuff getting my Long Gun Permit.. as in all the trips you have to take to get it..

The Class went well, the instructor was a really good guy. I like the 1 on 1 type thing so for me it was worth the money.. I will be getting a Glock 17 if I can find one. I did learn a lot about shooting and home defense. anyway now I just have to find a Glock 17.

For others reading this.
Besides the DLNR (Dept. of Land and Natural Resources) classes...........

Contact the Hawaii Rifle Asso. (NRAs contact point for Hawaii).

They may have something coming up in the future.

Aloha, Mark

Im not LE or Mil. But I have been thinking and I would not mind buying a used one as long as its a 3rd Gen glock or a XD in 9mm full size.. I have been talking to some people and for a used one I am looking at abour $400 it seems for a 3rd gen glock in good shape.. I will be going thur to a few gun shops to see what I can find.. if I cant find a used one for one for about $500 that is what I was told it would cost for a new one about 4 months ago from WGS I will have to wait a few more weeks befor I can buy.. But yeah like I said I am now looking for any full sized glock in 9mm or .45 and same with the XD.. I just need somthing to get me started.. seems alot of people are asking crazy prices right now tho..
