PUBLIC INFORMATION STATEMENT NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE ANCHORAGE AK 530 AM AKST SAT JAN 3 2009 ...LOWEST MINIMUM AND MAXIMUM TEMPERATURES THIS DECADE RECORDED YESTERDAY IN ANCHORAGE... THE OFFICIAL MINIMUM TEMPERATURE OF -16 DEGREES IN ANCHORAGE ON JANUARY 2ND IS THE LOWEST RECORDED THIS DECADE. THE LAST TIME ANCHORAGE WITNESSED A TEMPERATURE THIS LOW WAS FEBRUARY 8, 1999. ADDITIONALLY, THE LOWEST DAILY MAXIMUM TEMPERATURE THIS DECADE ALSO OCCURRED YESTERDAY WITH A HIGH OF -7 DEGREES OBSERVED AT THE NWS OFFICE. THE LAST TIME ANCHORAGE OFFICIALLY WITNESSED A DAILY MAXIMUM TEMPERATURE THIS LOW WAS FEBRUARY 4, 1999. THE CITY OF ANCHORAGE HAS ALSO NOW FAILED TO OFFICIALLY REACH ZERO DEGREES FOR FOUR STRAIGHT CALENDAR DAYS (DECEMBER 30TH - JANUARY 2ND), WHICH ALSO SETS A NEW MARK FOR THIS DECADE. THE LAST TIME A STREAK AS LONG AS FOUR DAYS WITH BELOW ZERO READINGS OCCURRED WAS A SEVEN-DAY STRETCH FROM JANUARY 30TH-FEBRUARY 5TH, 1999. It is 19 outside. Want to move to California or Hawaii, but most of my guns/magazines would be illegal Then again, I guess I should be thankful that I am not in fbks! Ill be glad to trade places, my wife is supportive of us moving to Anchorage because of the wonderful weather in the winter, I just need a job. |

THIS MEANS THERE HAVE BEEN 5 CONSECUTIVE CALENDAR DAYS OF SUB-ZERO TEMPERATURES THUS FAR. THIS TIES A RECORD FOR THE 6TH HIGHEST NUMBER OF CONSECUTIVE DAYS WITH TEMPERATURES LESS THAN ZERO DEGREES. Took this photo while marking trail for a dog race across the Inlet from Anchorage this past Saturday. It was about 5 p.m. on the Yentna River near the mouth of Lake Creek. Temp reading -48. | It keeps getting colder. -18 F this morning, and walking out to my car this morning at 6am the street was enveloped in a thick fog because it was flooded with water from a broken main. The water's off in my house and the city's stiill working on it14 hours later. |
