Yes you still have to attend a safety course if you wish to acquire a handgun in the state of hawaii.  The handguns that you brought with you are exempt from that requirement because you already had them and brought your personally owned property with you.  To get the safety requirement satisfied, you can either take a hawaii DLNR hunter safety class, take an NRA firearms class with live fire, or get a notarized affitdavit from your command on official letterhead stating that your military training satisfies the requirements.  If you are active military, i would go for the final option.

I know young guns has some nice kimbers and STI 1911s.  I dont know who stocks NH or Wilson on a regular basis but they do turn up on the consignment shelves of the stores from time to time

Back in the mid 90s when I used to sell guns this was the case.  Give HPD Firearms a call just to make sure.   Sorry, I don't have the # off hand.

For the custom gun order, if I were to do it locally I would go through Windward Gun Shop.  They are still there.  See Henry or Joe.  I know they are a Wilson Dealer, you might call and check on others.

As for the letter, see if your command will do up a letter similar to this

Unless the shop you go through is going to hook you up on the price, it seems like, you'd be better off transfering in a 1911.  Especially something like a nighthawk or wilson.  Standard oahu retail vs the rest of the country is pretty high.

Yep, the HI licensing that follows the NRA basic pistol course, plus familiarization of HI state firearms law is a total of 6 hours of instruction.  4 hours of classroom instruction, and 2 hours of live fire instruction.

The easiest way for military is via their command.  It is my understanding that the hunters safety course and LIFE can be a bit of a wait.  Private may be a less of a wait but cost more.  As I mentioned in person, if I find more time someday, I may get into the certification business mostly just to help people out, and not so much for the money.

Wilson Combat or Les Baer? I've never heard of a that and $1800 for a Wilson is on the cheap side.

I know Wilson was giving dealer cost to LE.  Is Nighthawk along the same lines?
