This may be a dumb question but... I understand how the pistol permits work but fuzy about the rifle and shotgun. Once you get a Rifle Permit you can buy all the rifles and shotguns you want for a one year period then you have to get a new permit right? Okay the last questions. Does that mean since you had to wait two weeks to get the permit that there is no wait for rifles from a gun shop? In other words you walk into a gun store with permit in hand, can you walk out the same day with the rifle or is there a waiting period for that too? I have lived here for quite a while and have choke guns but got them all from Vegas when I moved out there for a year. I am new to the gun buying in Hawaii. I got another week to wait for my permit as well. Already did the paper work at the police station a week ago. Mahalos in advance! |
It is a permit to acquire which allows you to receive a long gun from a dealer or private party. It is good for a year. Whenever you purchase a long gun you need to show that permit. Then you bring the long gun and bill of sale/invoice to the police department. There they will type out a permanent permit for that specific long gun. This is how they register the firearm. The permanent permit(or photocopy) is to be kept with the firearm at all times. You only need to renew the permit to aquire if you want to have the ability to purchase long guns. If you don't plan on buying any new long guns you do not have to renew. At renewal, you still need to wait two weeks after you apply for renewal....even though you may have 100 guns registered already with the police department. |

obm, am I right to assume that you can renew every year for no cost after the first time finger print? This is how I understood it. The laws may suck pretty bad here compared to allot of other states but its a little better than Vegas when I got guns out there cause it was $25 everytime you got a gun for a backround check. It does not sound like allot but I got allot of guns when I was there and it adds up. |

Correct, one time fee...renewals are free. |
