| OK I am building a 9mm AR anyone locally want to give me ideas etc .. where in town is trust worthy for parts etc .. I got a less than favorable response from ammo king today |
| i've been trying to find an AR15 ramped bolt no luck yet ... also noone seems to want to talk about their 9mm AR's in any detail .. Right now I am going to use a DPMS lower with a VM HyTech block so i can use unmodified uzi mags which are dirt cheap for 25 or 32 rounders . I was told I didnt need a 9mm hammer etc but I dont know ... just wish there was a book I could buy or a place locally to take my parts as i aquire them |

9mm AR's.....Yeah, Ive had several over the years. They are fun to shoot but you have to do a few mods to make them last and not beat your trigger and hammer holes to death. First, buy a KNS pin set for your lower receiver to replace your standard pins. These will all but eliminate wear for your lower and can withstand the pounding of an unramped 9mm bolt carrier. Second, ramp your bolt carrier. Ive ran unramped bolt carriers for years and didnt see any ill effects but I was running with KNS pins sets every time. Ramped bolt carriers relieve the stress on the hammer pin by having the carrier hit higher on the hammer face instead of down lower on the face which increases the stress on the hammer pin. You can use regular AR15 hammers with the 9mm setups and I would recommend using the factory Colt magwell adaptor and use factory Colt mags if you want the bolt hold open option. Uzi mags work great as well with the mag catch slot cut into them but they dont hold the bolt open on the last round. Only Colt's do that as far as I know. Regular AR15 upper receivers are the same as the 9mm uppers except they have the gas tube hole cut into the front versus no gas tube hole for factory 9mm uppers. Doesnt affect function either way. For me, I always used factory Colt uppers and parts with all my setups and they ran the best. There are other choices and many have had great success with theirs but I'm a Colt fan all the way. The Ammo Can is the best place in town for finding and purchasing AR15 parts and Lou has a factory Colt 9mm upper there if you would like to look at it for reference (it's not for sale, I already asked). The best deals to be had anymore are here in the equipment exchange forum. Read the link Ive provided below and it will answer a lot of questions you might have and you can talk to me anytime you like if you need to. http://www.ar15.com/lite/topic.html?b=3&f=15&t=108261 Good luck, Jason |
Good advice Jason. I may have to add KNS pins to the 9mm sbr I'm building. Regarding bolt ramping, I've been unable to get a straight answer on this; Can i use ANY ar trigger group? i want to use something with a lighter pull like the McCormick drop in unit or a JP set. I'm running a Hahn mag well block and Cproducts mags, I'm happy with that set up so far. Ben, The_Emu |
| where can i find a ramped 9mm bolt they seem to be scarce that other adapter the one i listed above is being run by alot of guys and unmodified uzi mags might be somehting i will try ....I think i'll visit the ammo can and buy some parts from them . the pin set and a 9mm buffer frist of course |

As far as i know no one makes a ramped 9mm bolt. You would have to have a standard 9mm bolt modded. ADCO does it. So does M60joe, who is a member of the boards. lots of good info to be found here: www.ar15.com/forums/forum.html?b=3&f=15 |
| I wouldnt hesitate to use one of the drop in match triggers or assembled trigger systems since the bolt carrier will still lock the hammer to the rear regardless of the hammer height. Ive messed with some of the drop in assembled trigger groups and they worked terrific. Now if they could just make an M16 drop in trigger groups so I could have a sweet semi-auto trigger pull along with the auto setting. Lou at The Ammo Can might be able to do the bolt ramping for you. He will be back to work on wednesday evening around 5 pm so go give him a shout. |
| thanks everyone .. I ordered the trigger parts today .. but which pins ? I was looking at that site lots of chocies . Jason which ones do you have .. and yes I will take plenty of pics with my super nikon when the parts come in ... anyone set a date for a AR15 forum shoot yet ? |

I bought the .155 pins since most of the AR's Ive owned are used. The .155's will fit in your new receiver but are really tight since the anodized finish alone could be causing it to be tight depending on how much they sprayed on it or how well the AR manufacturer machined their pin holes. Avoid the .170 size pins since these are for the large pin Colt receivers. If you buy a KNS pin set, make sure to put the solid pin in the hammer pin holes, not the trigger. The boys at KNS told me to put the solid pin with the hammer since the hammer pin was the one taking all the stress and breaking. Either way it will work but Ive seen the pin sets installed both ways but after thinking about it, the solid pin with the hammer makes sense. I would recommend getting the .155 pin set. On the knsprecisioninc.com website, they show a KNS non-rotating trigger/hammer pin set and the 3 sizes they have along with a picture of the pin set with 2 allen wrenches for $32.00. That's the set you want in .155. Last but not least, CALL THEM and talk to them to make sure whatever receiver you use will be ok with them. Always pays to double check before you buy. Their number is 1-830-997-0000 in Fredericksburg, Texas. Jason P.S. As for an AR15 shoot, call me when it's May and warm since I'm a big wuss at 20 degree or below weather unless we all go to the indoor shooting range out on the road to Palmer then I'm in. |

gsxrjason thanx for the tip on the KNS pins . Just for info purposes .... I am using an RRA upper with a Hahn drop in block . I blew the my Cav lower with it but I am posative it was a my fault not Cav Arms fault thing . I am now using a RRA lower I picked up on the board . I am using a DPMS parts kit , but I do have a 9mm hammer and buffer . Promags did not work at all for me . I have one UZi mag that works right after I cut the slot , and I screwed up the slot on the other seven . I have not decided if I am going to try and weld up the slot a bit and regrind it down but it is off just enough to not work . Go figure I get the first one right and the rest are junked . Oh well . I have not tried C mags yet , but I plan to grab some when I am back in AK full time . |
