Headed to see an old war buddy.

What is there to do there?

I'm looking to fish - best location from shore; what type of bait, tackle, etc.?

Thanks on any help

Eldon: Grant Wood American Gothic home. Get your picture taken.
Blakesburg: Airpower Museum. Haven't been there in years, so can't speak how it is.
Drakesville: Amish settlement; lots of shops etc. Good quality furniture/ products.
Sigourney: Dumont Museum. Very nice especially if you're into old tractors or model trains

All within 1/2 hr drive of OTM

The Des Moines  river runs right through the middl of town, with a dam downtown. Lots of people snag/fish on the bottom side of the dam. The park has stocked lagoons, lots of people fish on right by the campground. Lake Rathbun has many fishing opportunities 45 minutes away.

Head SW 45 minutes and fish Sugema Lake. Bass, walleye, bluegill and catfish. Beauty of a lake with jetties and docks. Plenty of shoreline access.

Gas/food/ beer all close to lake along with camping.

If it's the fairgrounds show yes it is worth going to.

Brownells is nice as well. Lots of stuff and anything you can think of you can order of the back.

You most likely won't find deals though, when I went everything was pretty high. Ymmv? Have fun! Lots of stuff to do in central Iowa!

Ottumwa is also the home of Corporal Walter "Radar" O'Reilly, though I hear he is kind of hard to find.

Make sure you hit The Canteen for a maid-rite.  There is also a pork tenderloin over on the south side. Name escapes me and I should remember it as it was only a couple of blocks from my house.  Tenderloins the size of a dinner plate.

And if you want something to do that's strange head over to Fairfield and see the floaters and the golden dome.

Ottumwa to DSM is a bit of a haul.  Same for Newton.  The good thing is it gets you out of Ottumwa.

The DSM show is the biggest one in Iowa and generally pretty good.  Brownell's is sort of a petting zoo.  Lots of guns to look at, prices are high.

That's funny. I went to school and my first two years of college there and it was a shit hole back then. Lots and lots of drugs.
And I shit you not, I lived on Mistletoe Ave. always thought that funny

Brownells is worth the trip if you want a bunch of over priced guns and parts. Nice store though. Nothing to do in Grinnell that's worth the drive.

Haha! Gotta mix it up some!?

Seriously though, Lake Sugema is pretty nice. Also, on the Northwest end of the lake there are 2 good sized ponds that are good for catfish and some crappie.  Good luck.

I've only been there once and it reminded me of a country Wal-Mart.

Your thinking of Ellis' Famous Tenderloins at Sheridan and Vine. It's long gone, now a mexican resturant that's not bad.
