Could someone with a midlength set-up with a standard front sight base do me a favor?
I'm curious what the measurement from where the gas tube leaves the sight base to where it enters the upper receiver through that little 4 lobed hole.
Just a straight line, not following the curve.
From red line to red line.
I am thinking of building a midlength and it seems that 9" must be the length but not sure.
I see some 10" handguards and am wondering where a 10 one would get to.
Thanks.

Oh yeah, forgot to mention that...
I am wondering about notching out the top of a free float rail to fit around the sight base and still leave the bayonet lug accessible.
The 11Bravo in me just can't see an AR without a usable bayonet lug.
It just isn't right.
It just isn't right at all.

This is one of the issues with midlength, they are not milspec, or I am sure there are minor differences between manufacturers on exact length.  That being said, I like my middy guns.  The length on a BCM gun will take a 9" rail if this is what you are asking.....also are you looking to keep the FSB.  If you are looking at cutting it down then you will want a rail that is 10.5 " or longer.
I can't remember what you had written exactly but thought you had said something about keeping the bayonet lug.  If that is correct then you will want the 9" rail and leave the FSB all alone.....I do this on my guns (I have one with a rail and one with just the standard Magpul MOE hand guards.

As far as rails, Daniel Defense does make the LITE rail that goes around the FSB.  They are rock solid and go on easier than most other rails out there.  I wouldn't go cutting any notches into rails....the aluminum will loose some strength and once you cut into them and do not re anodize them they will not last you very long.

I think you will like the mid length, I know I have butted heads with a few folks on this topic....but stand behind my opinion.  They do run smoother, less felt recoil impulse, and to me seem to balance as well as my SBR carbine.  To the point that I will not own another carbine length gas system unless it is an SBR.

And I think there are others of the same opinion......Pat Rogers, Travis Haley, Larry Vickers......ALL run middy guns.

I don't look down on carbine gas systems......they work.  I am just picky about my gear and guns.  I know how they work, and how they shoot and they have served me well.

notching your rail for a fsb won't hurt it. while the type III hard anodizing does offer 'strength' it is primarily abrasion resistance in this regard.  we' cut a ton of them, relieved lower and uppers, etc. and they aren't made lesser for the trouble.  yes, a loss of strength is technically correct, but it doesn't amount to anything a person can substantiate.

on the subject of other attributes of the mid length systems???  much like anything there is no free lunch.  it seems like you gain in one area and lose in another.  it should also be noted, the gains and the losses are extremely minute, so if a middy floats your boat, then go for it.  i'll only add the many claims of 'better' cannot be proven and haven't been with hard data, measurements, cycle times, and any solid state method of testing.  simply put, it is personal preference.  if you like it, run it.

Yeah, I figure it really is one of those things that boils down to "'cuz I want to" mostly.
Just something I am interested in.
Looking at one of the Lothar-Walther 1-8 polygonal barrels.
Biggest thing I think about notching a free float rail will be getting access to the FSB taper pins. ???
But I am also sure that with a bit of thunking and planning that can be overcome.

If you're building your own and you want to do it, why not?  Just keep in mind that carbine gas didn't stop working when midlength became fashionable.

Some food for thought: I see a lot of 9" midlength rails/tubes out there, but I also see quite a few that leave a tiny bit of the gas tube exposed.  Just look at pictures of built midlength guns and you'll see what I mean.  There are some 9.2" rails/tubes, and I'm guessing (no personal rifle to measure this with) that the 9.2" variety will cover up that extra bit of gas tube without hitting the FSB.  This may not matter to you, but the gas tube is somewhat fragile and a FSB acts like a perfect ramp for stuff to slot in between the rail and FSB and dent that thing. It would take something awfully small and hard and at just the right angle, but anything can and will happen to a beater gun.

Seems like the same situation as with rifle length gas systems, a 12" free float will leave a bit of gas tube exposed but a 12.3" (or whatever it is, can't remember) will cover it all up.

I have a BCM middy w/ the Centurion C4 rail cutout for FSB taper-pinned. Spendy, but solid.

That said, all of my new builds are going keyhole/modular HG.

The type of pie that's going to be in your future, is NOT the pie that I would want

Try spending a little more that $20 on your hookers
