My step son lives in Humboldt and I want to send him a 10/22 as a gift for his 20th birthday. When I talked to him earlier today he thinks he needs to buy a permit to own a rifle. From my research ( I read the sticky's, ty btw) a permit would only be needed if he was getting a pistol . Is this accurate?
I printed out some info from the sticky's that I will send with the rifle so he knows the rules for transport/etc... but is there anything I/he should know? Any help would be appreciated. Thank you for your time. Art |

Would have to send it through to an FFL here in Iowa if coming from out of state.
No need for a permit to acquire (you are correct, only for handguns) My suggestion: $220 gift card to wherever they sell 10/22's near him. Otherwise you'll have $20 shipping and he'll incur $20+ in FFL transfer fees for a $200 rifle. ETA: I have a buddy in Humboldt I could ask about gun shops in the area. |

Thanks for the reply.
Funny thing is his dad (In Humboldt) has an FFL and will transfer for him. He should know the rules and probably does, and the kid may be confused. I'm just trying to keep the facts straight, not break any laws and get him the rifle so he can be legal also. The rifle is one I considered an extra to me so I done a few upgrades for him. I'm only out shipping really. The wife and I got him a range bag, a couple mags, cleaning supplies and tools, some targets, and a couple other odds and ends. He should be set to enjoy the gun and take care of it. All he needs is ammo. Art |

So his dad has an FFL and you want to actually give him a rifle that you already have instead of him buying one?
That makes it simple as schnit. You can legally send a rifle through the mail, out of state, if it is received by an FFL holder in the state of receipt. Send it to his dad's gun business, not his dad personally. He may have to do a 4473, not sure on that. |

He agreed to do the 4473 so I am going to send it to his business for the transfer.
