Hello Iowans,
My long time friend (stationed together) wants to build an AR. He lives in Cedar Rapids and is debating between buying a stripped or a built lower. Does anyone have any good recommendations of stores/folks in the know to get him started. He's gone to Gander Mountain and looked at some bushmasters/S&W; but I'm sure there is someone/somewhere better than Gander. Any help is appreciated. Thank you gents. |

superior arms
I've got 2 of these AR's. Made in Wapello, IA. Very happy with them. Hope this helps. |

Have him get in touch with Septic on here.
Controlled Chaos Arms. Can get him everything he needs and more and as anyone on here will tell you is more than helpful. http://controlledchaosarms.com/ |

Actually i can't recommend the Superior Arms lowers. Had issues with two of the builds, one receiver wasn't full taped for the pistol grip bolt and the other receiver wouldn't match up with a Bushmaster upper receiver (pins wouldn't go through the upper).
I would talk to Septic at CCA or get one of these. |
| we hold ar15 build clinics along with shoots and a potluck periodically through the year. he can buy, build, swap, try on others stuff, etc. we help people build their own weapons so they can better understand what they have and what they're doing. if he's safe and curious to learn he's more than welcome to attend one. doesn't cost anything but some time and a side dish to attend... |

I would stay far away from Superior Arms. I've seen some crappy stuff come from them. That coupled with their complete lack of customer service has kept me from buying any of their products. Sorry to hear that. Like I said, I've got 2 of their rifles and have put several thousand rounds through them with no problems. One rifle I bought at a gunshow and the other I bought privately, so I've never dealt with them directly and don't know how the customer service is, but the rifles have been fine for me. BTW, I bought completely assembled rifles, I didn't build them. YMMV |

CR has a good gun show. If your wanting to use Pmags than superior arms is a NO GO. They work in mine. CR gunshow first weekend in September, I think. Also Cedar Valley Outfitters in Marion stocks a lot of AR stuff. My 2 wont take a Pmag without a hammer. Last lower I got was at the CR show took a Pmag to try and not one SA lower would even think of taking it so I bought a RRA. No problems with the ones I have other than that I am happy with them. |

For as cheap as lowers are, I wouldn't take a chance on superior. If you want a plain mil spec lower, folks seem happy with the palmetto state armory lowers that go on sale periodically for $50. That being said, the price difference between the basic lowers and the top of the line CCA lowers isn't much. Buy once cry once. |
