Hey guys I was just wondering if Iowa has any silly magazine laws or anything else I need to know about before I bring my AR into Iowa.  Going to my wifes cousins house for turkey day and have no clue about any of there gun laws.  I know CCW is a no go as of right now.

I THINK this will cover it.  There is a tacked thread at the top of Iowa HTF that is more inclusive...

Iowa DPS

No magazine restrictions, other than those regarding transporting...

None exist there as long as it is detached, any magazine may be loaded as long as the magazine is detachable and detached from the firearm. In other words if any magazine is not attached to the firearm it may be transported loaded.

Many people will argue that IDNR (Iowa Department of Natural Resources) laws prohibit loaded magazines in a vehicle.

While I believe the intent of the law was to prohibit loaded shotguns with their fixed magazines, the law is written such that it can be interpreted to mean any firearm magazine, fixed or not.

In fact, the way the law is written, you could potentially get into trouble for having a loaded magazine in the vehicle, without a firearm even being in the vehicle.

I believe that starting January 1st, 2011, the wording changes to specify magazines fixed to the firearm.

EDIT:  Correction, I found the reference, and remembered that this "interpretation" only applied to rifles/shotguns.

If you will be in the Western part of the State (I live in Guthrie Co), give a shout.

Do you realize that that has been superseded by H.F 2200 passed earlier this year. Any magazine that can be detached and is detached may be loaded. This was originated as a Natural Resources bill for hunters, deer hunters specifically. It took effect July 1 this year.

Obviously I didn't realize it, or I wouldn't have posted what I did.

Thanks for the correction.  I'm glad that law got fixed.

this law change wasn't the fight we thought it might be up at the capitol this year...  it never applied to handguns, even though some thought it did...  but it was nice to have the clarity in regard to detaching magazines and a positive law change.
