I thought I read something back during the push to get the shall-issue law passed about the law on transporting magazines being changed and allowing loaded mags not in the firearm. Could have sworn what I read said it went into effect before the shall issue law does, but the hunting regulations still say all magazines must be unloaded. Am I wrong, or has it simply not taken effect yet?
It's not an issue with my AR as when I go target shooting I take one mag for slow fire use(ammo's too expensive for much rapid fire), but with my Garand, as with a lot of shooters, some of my ammo comes pre-loaded on clips. Following the law to the letter, if I bought a can of clips at the gunshow I'd have to spend half an hour stripping the ammo off just to haul it home. Sure, I'd be UNLIKELY to get pulled over and searched but the law's the law, and the discussion is for what the law says, not what most of us may or may not actually do. |

This is the law as it is as of July1, 2010. It states does not apply to handguns but handguns were already permitted to have detached loaded mags. The new law does not state any gun type so in its final form pertains to all. Also as you see it is under Natural Resources. I think that this years regs were put into print prior to and not changed to reflect the new law.

Allow hunters to keep the detachable magazine on their shotgun or rifle (clips) loaded in their vehicle, as long as the gun is taken down (disassembled) or totally encased. Attached magazines have to be unloaded. This bill only pertains to long-guns, not hand-guns. (passed House 92-6) H.F. 2200 Another printing of the law. instead of starting a new thread, im going to just post my question in here.
So im a little confused on the rules here, House file 2200 is just throwing me off a bit. from my understanding after July 1st, its legal to load detachable magazines and transport them in your car. And that is about all im clear on. So the question is, where do i have to store these while i transport? can i have them in the Mag pouches on my Gunbag? While im at it, Can i throw my gun bags in the back seat of my truck, if they are unloaded and the ammo is separate? I usually throw my ammo cans in the back of the truck, and put the gun bags in the back (its a extended cab, but the back seat has been removed). let me break it down -Loaded mags in ammo cans in the bed of the truck -gun bags behind driver seat (all guns unloaded) -long drive to the range -happy day at the range -for some reason paying for a chicks ammo, eve tho she has a new boyfriend now (FML) |

reread it...
totally encased... simple stuff. don't make this harder than it needs to be. don't have the magazine in your weapon when full. same bag, different bag, outside pockets, doesn't matter. while i'm not a lawyer, if you make an effort to keep the weapon (cased product) out of your reach as a driver, you'll be ok... stowing a range bag is different in a winnebago as compared to a motorcycle... |

Something needs to be done about Iowa Code ยง 321I.14(2). There is no reason the DNR should be able to restrict carrying while on an ATV if the operator has a weapons permit.
I shouldn't be considered poaching until I have actively attempted to kill something. Applicable DNR faq hosted at IFC |

Its better to not leave anything to chance with these issues. Thanks for the reply. decided to just take the car tomorrow anyhoot, so guns will be locked in the trunk. But for future references its good to know i can stow them in the back of the truck where they can be locked up and covered some. |
