| Most of the manufacturers (Model 1 Sales & others in Shotgun News) sell a lightweight AR upper with a pencil barrel. Now granted they are already built but lately trying to find individual components has been a little hard to find, although it does seem like supply is catching up with demand and dealers are showing items in stock. Since you've already got the lower that saves money but adds weight...I just bought a couple CavArms MKII lowers and I'm going to build one for my daughter with a Tac Sol .22lr AR upper and it will be VERY light weight. I believe I seen that the CavArms lower/stock combination is a pound or more lighter in weight than a "standard" AR configuration of metal materials. I look forward to what others will have to say as I'm new to this lightweight AR stuff myself. |

Here's a handy table for weights of different items (courtesy of another arfcom member).
Weight Table I'm in the process of lightening my carbine as well. a 16" pencil barrel and a 14.5" M4 config. w/ pinned FH to reach 16" are close to the same weight. Not that the .223 is a real kicker, but keep in mind, the lighter you go, the more 'felt' recoil there will be. |

I know Septic will yell at me, but the lightest option would be a pencil barrel chopped to 14.5" w/ a perm. attached muzzle device to bring it to 16"
A close second would be a pencil bbl w/ a target crown and no threads at 16" Throw a carbon fiber tube on there w/ a smooth sided upper and you have a VERY light piece. |

I picked up one of these barrels from Brownell's:
http://www.brownells.com/.aspx/pid=23131/Product/AR_15_M16_SERVICE_RIFLE_BARRELS I used it to build a VERY light weight carbine. |

16" Bushmaster SuperLight Barrel chrome lined. Got one on a m4 upper and love it. 7 lbs 3 oz with A2 stock, Bushmaster carry handle, and sling. My 12y/o can shoot it no problem. I think its a good buy for $235 with everything but the upper.
On the cheaper side is the model 1 sales light weight from midway MODEL 1 BARREL out of stock till the 17th it says. It comes with just the sight base(no sight parts) and barrel nut I have no first hand experience but price is right. I do have the model 1 M4 barrel and that thing will shoot. |
