Anything new?  Haven't gotten any emails in a few days and the website isn't offering much.  Are we still alive or is this one dead for this session?   I know we were very close and then there was a last minute re-write that threw a monkey wrench into the works.

I thought I saw something in the Register that said it's dead in the water for this year.

State Rep Rick Olson of Polk County murderd the language and the NRA and Iowa Carry no longer supported it.  It is dead :(  Funny how the rep for the most "shall issue" county in IA is the one who killed it.

That's what I thought happened.  Next year I guess.  It does seem the movement has made some progress.  Some counties have moved out of the red into the yellow.  I got mine from Story County last year without to much grief.  Ten years ago that never would have happened.

I ran into Roger Burdette at lunch today, I asked him about it going south, he indicated it was still being looked at.

At the Gunshow, I hit up the Iowa Carry Booth they said that the Rep killed it and the NRA backed away from it, but there still might be hope if they can fix it I guess.

Yes true there is a last ditch effort that is being sought out.  Cross your fingers.  You are right though, the movement has grown substantially this year!  The fact that there are two rival gun rights groups, although very frustrating it may be, is also encouraging to me.  And the NRA sure called in the troops with their grassroots workshops this year.  So many people who are NRA members or subscribers now know about the shall issue movement who might not have prior.

Also, while some sheriff's are loosening issuing biases, don't confuse it with a good system.  Because it sure as hell isn't.  I always laugh when I see someone post "Sheriff X issues his permits fairly" because nothing will ever be fair until the Sheriff isn't given the chance to be fair or unfair.

Yes.  While it is a good thing, it will detract from much of the momentum of the cause.  If this isn't pushed through while interest is ripe, we will end up in the same situation in the future.

Hey guys, i got tipped off to this breaking news about Iowa shall issue listening to Cam&Co. tonight - anyway sounds important.

Apparently a new bill for shall issue carry is now on the move, so contact your reps:

from http://www.iowacarry.org/forums1/index.php?showtopic=18849:

Today, HF 2528 and 6267XS were introduced. These bills are companion bills introduced by the House and Senate leadership (McCarthy and Gronstal). They contain the exact language originally submitted in HF 2255 - before the horrible Olson changes. This is OUR bill - the one we are supporting!

Start making polite and respectful phone calls and sending emails to your Representative and Senator. Do both and get your friends and neighbors, brothers and sisters to do so too. The message is simple, "Please pass (HF 2528, in the house and 6267XS, in the Senate) as written - with no amendments!" This is the language we want and messing with it will only open the door for others to mess with it as well.

On the House side, the HF 2528 has been assigned already to a subcommittee of the Public Safety Committee - comprised of Lykum, Baudler, and R. Olson. Olson will try to change this bill in subcommittee! He's already said so! In the most respectful way possible we have to try to stop this from happening. So, make polite and respectful calls and send emails to these three gentlemen as well! Same message! No amendments!!!

This is a great opportunity for Iowans to get Shall Issue. These bills have a real chance for passage. But, we all have to do the work that will push this over the top.

What exactly did  Rep Olson add to the old bill, I haven't had time to figure it out?

I understand that is old news, but I'm still not sure exactly what Rep Olson did to the old bill to get it killed.  What was the language that he added to it, lest he should do it again?
I'm sending emails on the current bill.
Thanks,
ML Roak

it didn't even make it into hard copy it was so poor.  he has been quoted as saying "i'm trying to balance your rights with public safety" ...  we didn't publicize it since it was a waste of time...  he may or may not try this again, but the need to lean on this subcommittee is great since the other two can vote whatever changes he'd like to make down.  that is where our firepower is concentrated right now and why.
