Ok well i took my exam today and passed the tech and general tests so now i'm a ham!!!

A really nice thing is that i joined the carc (ISU's ham club) and now i'm the VP of that club so I can use all of their equipment. So i have access to really nice HF radios and uhf/vhf stuff and the multiple repeaters we have on campus.

Now i just have to wait for my callsign and save some money for a vx-7r or something similar.

Congrats.  Fellow ham here.

Don't give out your callsign on the interweb when you get it.
There are websites out there that can do a callsign search.
Enter the callsign, and it will return your name, address, etc.

I have had a license for 25+ years.
The only radio I have hasn't been used in YEARS.
Ham radio has pretty much died since cell phones and internet became mainstream.

I have been thinking about it.  How difficult were the technician and general exam?  I didn't even know ISU had such a club.

First, welcome to the club and congrats!

Second, I had no idea that The_Reaper was that old (like my age)!!!    I always pictured you as younger.

I'm a Ham and we also have an Arfcom HF net based in the Survival Forum here.  Great bunch of guys and there is a Ham sub forum there.

i got my tech plus when i was 8 and my general at age 10...  needless to say my dad was a big ham...  i can remember going to the "hamfest" at various places on saturdays as a kid.  haven't used anything but 2meter and 440 in years...  frankly i thing mine expired.

dad'll be pissed if finds out.  guess i'll have to check into it again.

my dad spent several years in iran while in the peace core through the mid 70's.  he still visits with friends he made overseas via morse from time to time.

funny thing about hams...  they'll be prepared long after the last generator quits powering a cell tower in the event something bad happens...
