First shotgun this weekend. Who's heading into the woods?
I'll be just east of Indianola Saturday and Sunday. Supposed to be masses of deer down there but I've heard that before. Did the bow thing once already, without success. Stay safe and stay warm. Don't shoot the orange deer. |

I am headed out this weekend and taking my 9 year old son out and see if he can get his first deer. I bought him an 870 20ga youth model and he seems to shot it fine so we will see. Dose anyone know can he get a deer tag at his age with out a hunter saftey cert. or a hunting lic. since he will be with me? Thanks E3 |
| Good luck to all who venture out for the shotgun seasons this year. I myself never liked all the masses of people out during shotgun season,so i opted for late muzzleloader season for the last 10 years. I did hunt with a handgun for a few years, but thats alot like hunting with a bow,the shot has to be just right! Good luck and be safe. |

Thanks E3 They're offered all over the place and he's at the right age to get the most out of it. It's cheap and only takes a few hours. Since he'll be carrying a gun, he's going to need it eventually anyways. I did hunt with a handgun for a few years, but thats alot like hunting with a bow,the shot has to be just right! I gave up lugging a shotgun through the woods and started hunting with my 629 a few years ago. Before these new-fangled ballistic-tip sabots, I've got about the same chance as hitting it with my pistol. One more on the be safe and have fun! |

Going with 762x54R Saturday. In IA? Unless you hunt a special antlerless hunt in bottom two counties you are looking for trouble. http://www.iowadnr.gov/law/files/08huntingregs.pdf http://www.iowadnr.gov/index.html
Shotgun 2 for my hunting party, we get two weekends. |

Hope everyone has had good hunt this weekend so far. My hunt started off very bad then ended quite well. It started out yesterday on my drive from Clinton County up to Decorah, IA. I got about 5 miles out of Decorah on Hwy 9, hit a patch of black ice on a bridge, went into a flat spin and got introduced to the side of a rock cliff. Truck was totaled. I'll post a pic of the truck later after i get them on my computer. All I got was a scrape on my neck from the seatbelt. But today I"m rather stiff and sore. http://i38.photobucket.com/albums/e124/ford_shooter/2001FordRangerVSRockCliff002.jpg Later the same day I went out and started my hunt. I passed up 1 doe after sitting about an hour. Alittle while after that I took a few shots at a coyote that was in a rush. I nicked him in the rear but it didn't stop him. About an hour later a herd of deer, 2 bucks and 6 does ran out in the open field and the lead started flying. My first shot stopped them, and my second shot dropped one of the bucks. I checked the range after the shot with my range finder and it came out to 180yards. My uncle who was on the other side of the field couldn't believe i hit it at that range. That was the highlight of my bad day! http://i38.photobucket.com/albums/e124/ford_shooter/003.jpg that's a hell of a good way to end the day.... ;) |

Man those two deer make my two little 6 pointers i shot ( party hunting ) look like big dogs
Our hunting area got flooded three times this year. And there is little to no food for the deer to eat and the deer moved out of the area. Out of 5 hunters I am the only one that shot any deer. It was our worst season ever. E3 that is what surprised me about that monster princeton buck that young man shot with his bow. i've been through some of those areas quite a bit and lot of low lying areas have had the deer, turkey, etc. pushed out... of course water fowling is up a bit, but most of the "dry" creatures were pushed around quite a bit... |

I wish we had "rodents" like out in Wyoming and Colorado no you don't... while i know exactly what you're saying and it is fun to drop a high volume of fire down, you don't want the problems associated with those little fuckers... they are very costly to kill and bread like flies... not to mention, they can quite literally destroy a perfectly good tract of land in a single year to the point that earth moving equipment and ripping tines are required just so you can disc it... you should head out there and do some shooting some time... i bet you'd like it. |
