i've wanted a chris reeve for a long time for hunting. i'd have bought one by now, but the problem is i lose them... much like watches and sunglasses, i can't seem to keep a decent knife around. i wish i knew more about them. the only place i look is the occasional sporting good store and that dude by the girl's shitter at the 4H show. he has some nice stuff. i downloaded all the information from the knife forum here about the four part article on making your own knives using the relief method. my brother and i are making some from precision ground A2 currently. nothing special, just a basic knife for hunting and gutting. between knives and flashlights i could use some help... lol. |

By far, the best knives I have purchased recently for cutting up deer were $15 units from fareway. The store in Des Moines by me wouldn't sell the knives their meat dept uses, but the one in Osceola did. Brand name is Forschner. It says Victorinox fibrox on the handle. This year I was able to make short work of three deer with them, and I couldn't beat the price. For what they are like to use, imagine a fillet knife, only with a little less flexibility in the blade and a no slip grip. While field dressing, I was able to go through the pelvic bones with only a sturdy push and a little wiggle- blade, not point first. No, they don't look cool, and are probably not what you are looking for. However, they work, and it is really easy to keep an edge on one. |

I have owned my CRKT Desert Cruiser for almost 5 yrs now. I only sharpen it once maybe twice a year. It works for what I use it for, which is anything. I have used it as a small prybar, a screwdriver, and of course a knife. Droping nearly $100 for this thing, I would recommend them to anyone except, Septic. I don't hunt so I can't tell how it would work for that, but it does slice through my finger with little resistence!

the only folder I have right now is some cheapy smith&wesson thing but it work well for 20$. My awesome knife is a gerber LMFII which i've had for over a year. It stays EXTREMELY sharp and is very very very sturdy for a nice folder I ether want a CRKT m16 SF or a gerber aplegate. But a surefire folder would always be a much desired thing. |
Those are boning knives. I bought a ton of them at an auction way back when. For the price they are great. My knife knowledge is limited to those of the food variety. I know that pure carbon steel is the best for an edge but will lose that edge quickly and rust quickly. Stainless is tough to get a good edge on, but when it's there it'll last longer and of course vitrtually no rust. The knives I bought for cooking were Messermeister's which have a hell of an edge. They are a blend of stainless and carbon steel. If I had it to do over again I would buy carbon steel blades. They are like razors, and with care rust is not an issue. One of my favorite knives is a crappy handled carbon steel knife I found in my first apartment. I think I could shave with it. Not much to look at, but it's awesome. |
