Story County very tough though better than he used to be.  I've never bothered to try but know a few people who have been successful.

From what I understand Polk COunty has eased up considerably.

Johnson County, don't even ask.

Polk County:

Take a class, and shoot a qualifier.

Must reshoot every other year.

Permit is $11.

[#3]
Boone County is very good about CCW. All you do is take a class and renew th permit every year.

Mahaska is worthless, the sherriff issues them with restrictions so as to make them useless.  And wapello is almost as bad.

According to some of the guys at the local Izzak Walton League for Linn county you need to tell them you carry $500 or more on you.  The sheriff will then put on your permit that you MUST have $500 on you or you will be illegally consealing.  Of course you need to take the class and shoot a qualifier.  Don't know how much it costs.  Don't know if you need to reshoot or not but you will have to renew every year.

That is a new one on me.  Must have $500 cash on you?  I'm not sure I've ever had $500 cash on me.

What is the deal with the Johnson County Sherrif?  What does he have against people having CCW?

Yeah it is dumb.  I was talking to others and they said people with glocks put $500 in some hole in the grips (don't know glocks).  That way they always have $500 when they carry.

It is supid that the Linn county sheriff thinks $500 is worth more then a human life.

That's just the People's Repbulic of Johnson County in action.  Been like that forever.  Even getting a permit to acquire in that county is a pain in butt.  Needed eight forms of id including utility bill, voter registration card, bank statements, etc etc etc, AND then you get to come back later and get finger printed.  At least it was that way a few years ago when I lived there.

From the great white north, Winnebago county sucks. The sheriff gives the class at his leisure. He won't let anyone else give it. He personally watches you shoot your qualifier. No one else would score you right. He will also stall you on your permit to buy for as long as is humanly possible without getting his arse in a sling. Not to mention, every chance he gets he tells everyone that there is absolutely no need for private citizens to own firearms. Those should be used by LEO and military. I know, vote him out. That probably wouldn't be such a hard thing except for the fact that no one will run against him. Last time I wrote in Mickey Mouse. Figured I'd have a better chance getting him elected than getting a CCW.

From what I've been told Cherokee county is ok. Woodbury I know for a fact is no-go, the sheriff only gives CCW to his deputys and golf buddies.
6/3/2004 2:30:25 PM EDT
[#12]
Jasper County is a no-go unless you're a buddy of the Sheriff I hear.  The president of the Corporation I'm joining knows him though and says after a demonstration or two for the department he could put a name with the face and have a reasonably good chance of getting CCW.  Something about carrying Class 3 in a vehicle unarmed kind of scares the sheriff's me thinks

dickinson county northwest Iowa.  Sherrif not huge on guns and controlling them BUT..a member of the okoboji police department runs the show.  He is a huge gun fag...his words not mine and figures if you pass his class and shoot well then you diserve your right to carry.  Not a problem.  I have heard that many surrounding counties are horrible.

get out and vote in november if you want CCW. sheriff election's coming up.

linn county you need $500 in cash on you. its stupid but sheriff has the ability to make the restrictions.

johnson county does not issue anymore. even when it did had crazy restrictions. renewals are easy.

dont remember the name but one county required you to have $2000 in cash on you.

have heard story(ames) county is not to bad. sounds like depends on mood of the sheriff on that day.

[#15]
Calhoun county is ok.Take a saturday afternoon class and you are on your way.5.00 a year to renew.
Webster county is about the same, from what I am told.
Greene county is a no go from what I've heard.Sherriff is against concealed carry and not a big fan of civilian gun ownership.
9/22/2004 7:47:49 PM EDT

I have had mine in Pottawattamie for 5 years, took one 4 hour evening class and have had $5.00 renews. Lastest renew has no restrictions printed on it

I'm considering moving to Warren county. Wondering  what they are like when it comes to issuing? If nothing else, wonder if  they would allow a new resident to transfer a ccw from another county? Anybody know???

scott county is like linn co, you can protect your cash but not your family.
11/28/2004 7:30:48 PM EDT

Harrison County is not too bad. Sheriff Baxter is issuing almost on a 'shall issue' basis. Deputy Dean is not so gun-friendly; be careful if you ever meet him packing!

P.S.: Aviator - What about that Huey? You RH? I'm PASEL/PRH, although I haven't been able to fly a helo since IWCC crashed theirs

well Cedar county may just as well be called NON-ISSUE I was told you need a Bona Fide reason and personal protection/self defense is not one. so its either be a cop or give the JBT (republican might I add) sheriff a BJ

WRIGHT County was good '95.  Take the class and a background check, pay the fee.

Moved to POLK Co. in '98 and at the Polk Co Sherriff's office I was told it would be next to impossible to get one and I couldn't transfer the one I had.

Haven't tried since...

Pardon me...., but ?

"the right of the people to keep and bear arms, shall not be infringed."

Seems pretty straight forward... 'How then is it that there are restrictions in place anywhere in the US?

I of course don't have to worry about this as I don't have any RKBA

Ghost-Archer definately try again at CCW in Polk County as Sheriff Anderson is MUCH better than Sheriff Bob Rice ever was as he never approved CCW's, unless of course he was one of his "good old boys".  In Polk County it's just a matter of pay the fee and attend a class to obtain your CCW.

Here in Jasper County the Sheriff doesn't sign much in the way of CCW either but I'm hoping to get one after talking with him and explaining how it would benefit everyone involved since I'm a Class 3/SOT dealer and would be transporting such weapons.  Plus a department demonstration could never hurt either, a partner in our Corporation has dealt with this Sheriff and said we'll just go in and talk with him this spring...sounds great to me!

Why bother getting a pistol?  Borrow one from a friend for the class.  Heck, they may even rent them for the class.

You don't need a pistol to get a CCW :)
2/4/2005 8:33:22 PM EDT
[#30]
BUT...if you can talk your wife into you NEEDING a pistol to take the CCW class then by all means don't borrow one.  Bogz I'm ashamed of you...you must be getting all domesticated and teary-eyed in your old age trying to tell someone to borrow a pistol instead of them talking their wife into needing a pistol.  I want you to go back and read your reply...too fast...do it again...now don't you feel silly posting your comment?!  Seriously though it's good seeing you around and we need to come up with some kind of Iowegian get-together fun shoot or something later this spring.

Ghost-Archer let us know how everything turns out with your Polk County CCW class and any other questions you or anyone else may have.

I have had mine in Pottawattamie for 10 years and the wife have had her's for 8 years took a 4 hour evening class and have had $5.00 renews. The last 2 years have had no restrictions printed on it  they use to say[ invalid when  using or consuming alcohol or illegal drugs] which was no big deal anyway.  This the place to get'em !

after an $11 Polk County permit, I got my Super Blackhawk!!!

But I think I'll pass on the CCW...
$75 for the class then $11 for the new permit...  $86 would buy a nice holster and cartridge belt from Cabela's...

Whats with the bill to ban all "military style" (whats that mean? duh) weapons in Iowa and make everyone with one register them?!?!

I guess here in Burlington, a stones throw from ILL, were only allowed half of our 2nd amendment. It reads "the right of the people to own and bear arms." I just went to the sheriffs off. and you have to need it in a professional manner to be considered. I guess I will not be voting for him in the next election.

+1 blackta6

I was thinking there was a state law that made them take applications at least one day per week...
3/21/2005 8:56:14 AM EDT
[#36]
The office clerk offered me an application, but with a look of you don't need and you won't get it, so don't apply. She then went on to inform me of the professional need..... Why don't we find a rep, or sen. who would support a "shall issue" instead of a "may issue". How many would be interested in that? Can't change the laws unless WE THE PEOPLE try!

I had a ccw permit for 8 years when I lived in Boone county...10 years ago I moved to Lee county and have not been able to get one here!  We have a new sheriff in Lee county, so hopefully he will be more open to ccw applications.

I just took the 4 hour class in Bremer and they told us we had to carry over $10,000 dollars routinely or have a professional need to get them for anything but "sporting purposes", which essentially allows us to carry anyplace we would probably be armed anyway...

I will let you all know when I hear back on my application.  He said it would take over a month to decide on them.

The tone of the class was anti-gun, and I sense there were several of the sheriff's buddies amongst some of the students in the class.

This is so damn unfair that your rights can be infringed simply based on which side of the county line you live... grrrr

The really sickening thing is they told us in class that it's not "reasonable" to use force to defend property.  So why does how much money you have make a difference?  Even if it was "reasonable" I find it appalling that the sheriff considers someone's safety as more worthy of protecting based on what kind of job they have...

Recently went to qualify at WIT in Sioux City for my permit, talked to the instructor there, he said the new Woodbury county sheriff is signing for permits as promised durring his election, but that word has not gotten out much yet, so thier class attendance is up but not swamped yet.

Well, avoid Bremer County as a place to live if you value your rights and/or safety...

I got a permit that is only good for target shooting.  What kinda retarded moronic assinine utterly useless bullshit is that?

I'll already be at the range with at least one firearm that I can legally carry both openly and loaded.  What the hell good is a concealed handgun supposed to do?

I guess my ass is moving asap.  Fuck this shit....

Black Hawk county sheriff is pro gun and will issue a weapons permit to carry to you so long as you do not have a criminal record.

Also on a side note, when we get another republican governor (Jim Nussle comes to mind), we need to push for a shall issue in this state.
5/16/2005 4:16:29 AM EDT

You need to push for them to accept a Texas CCW so I can carry when I come home every once in a while.

I'll have to give it a try after I get back from Iraq. It wouldn't make much sense to get one now and then be gone for 15 months.

Well blacktac6 I am a reserve sheriff deputy in Des Moines Co. and i can see why the Sheriff dosent give out CCW to every one. There is a big risk on his part if he gives someone an CCW and they do somethng stupid. people can come back on him and the county.  Now i have an CCW because iam  reserve deputy and iam certifed throught the states ILEA.  Join the sheriff  reserves if you can and then you can get an CCW.  After your first year of training. Actually I know EARRNHARDT3 very well and I don't think he even likes dounuts.  Also he is correct about our old sheriff (glad that putz is gone)...  I personally feel that any law abiding US citizen over age around 25 should have the right to carry a weapon concealed or unconcealed depending on the situation.

That other right (freedom of speech) kind of trampled all over the right you mention...  I like the good old days of toting my handgun open on my dash or my rifle in the back window of my pick-up truck, like any good'ol redneck should  :)

well, this cinches it...

i've managed to run around this site for almost a year and hadn't noticed most of the other things it has to offer besides the ar-15 stuff...  i just ran across the local things a few days back.  i had talked myself out of spending the extra money to become a team member, but now i see there is plenty of good reason to let loose of the extra cash.  the discussion here is great.  can't always agree, but its remains lively and such...

as for CCW, i live in jasper county and have heard horror stories, but it remains to be seen for me.  i've been hesitant to ask for a carry permit due to what i "hear".  i've yet to steer my life due to what i "hear" so i reckon this is no different.  looks like i need to pay a visit to the law center and make my request.  i'll have an answer soon i'd suppose.

kudos to everyone for speaking your piece!
